UNC’s Loren Shealy named to U.S. field hockey team

Recent North Caroina graduate Loren Shealy was named to the U.S. women’s national field hockey team Thursday by coach Craig Parnham.

Shealy will join the U.S. team, which qualified for the Rio Olympics with a gold medal in the Pan American Games earlier this month, in August to train full-time in Lancaster, Pa.

She is among six former Tar Heels on the team, along with Jackie (Kintzer) Briggs, Rachel Dawson, Katelyn Falgowski, Kelsey Kolojejchick and Caitlin Van Sickle.

Basketball

N.C. State: Staats Battle and Chase Cannon were recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches for academic excellence last season as selections to the NABC Honors Court.

Men’s soccer

USL Premier Development League playoffs: A number of alumni from the Triangle will try to help their teams to the title in the USL Premier Development League playoffs in Tukwila, Wash., this weekend.

▪ N.C. State Zach Knudson will join forces with fellow sophomores Brian White and Joe Ohaus of Duke for the New York Red Bulls U23 team.

New York takes on Ocala at 9 p.m. Friday. The second semifinal between K-W United and Seatttle Sounders U23 will follow. The PDL championship will be played Sunday at 5 p.m.

Knudson, a midfielder, is tied for the team lead with five goals and two assists in 10 games.

White, also a midfielder, has started all 11 games in which he has appeared and has four goals and three assists. He is tied for second in points and is fourth in goals scored.

Ohaus, Duke’s starting goalkeeper, has played in two games for 180 minutes with New York.

Women’s soccer

Duke: Junior Krysia Sikora was selected to participate with Poland’s women’s national team in the upcoming Balaton Cup from Aug. 1-3 in Hungary.
