Ex-Tar Heel Laquanda Dawkins to coach Elizabeth City Vikings women
ELIZABETH CITY Elizabeth City State announced the hiring of Laquanda Dawkins as the new head coach for women’s basketball.
Dawkins was a member of the Tar Heels from 1995-99 when the team won three ACC . She was also named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll and received the Coach’s Award for the 1998-99 season.
Dawkins comes to ECSU after a one year stint as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech.
She earlier served as head women’s coach at Southern Polytechnic State, in Marietta, Ga., which she guided to three NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship appearances in her four seasons and compiled a 83-43 record.
A Shelby native, , Dawkins broke the 20-year-old Crest High School all-time scoring record of David Thompson, who became at legend at N.C. State.

Field Hockey
UNC: Heading into the season opener at Michigan on Saturday, Coach Karen Shelton has announced that senior midfielder Emily Wold will serve as team captain for 2015 with junior back Julia Young as vice captain.
Lacrosse
UNC: Sloane Serpe (’14) joined fellow former Tar Heel Erica LaGrow’s staff at Yale.
Soccer
Campbell: After a thrilling double-overtime victory on Monday afternoon, the team continues its 2015 home schedule at 7 p.m. Saturday against Davidson.
Volleyball
Saint Augustine: The Lady Falcons will open the season by welcoming North Greenville, Glenville State, Fayetteville State, Elizabeth City State and West Virginia State to the first annual Lady Falcon Challenge Sept. 4-5.
