Camels open football season against Pikeville

Campbell opens its football season at 7 p.m. Thursday against visiting Pikeville (Ky.).

The Camels, who finished 5-7 in Mike Minter's second season in 2014, were picked to finish fourth in the Pioneer Football League.

The Camels return 15 combined starters, led by defensive end Ugonna Awuruonye, an all-conference selection last season who transferred from Appalachian State.

Pikeville, an NAIA school, opened its season with a 32-13 victory over Bluefield last week.

UNC: North Carolina and South Carolina have agreed to two additional season-opening football games in 2019 and 2023 to be played in Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium.

Baseball

NCCU: Coach Jim Koerner announced two additions to the coaching staff, A.J. Battisto and Neal Henry.

Men’s Basketball

Wake Forest: The Deacons are set to open the season at home on Nov. 13 against UMBC.

Men’s Cross Country

Duke: The Blue Devils are set to open the campaign ranked ninth in the ACC coaches poll.

Swimming and Diving

Duke: Former Blue Devils standout and current volunteer assistant coach Ashley Twichell has been selected to the 2015-16 USA Swimming National Team, earning a spot on the U.S. roster for the fifth consecutive year.

Women’s Basketball

ECU: League games begin Dec. 30. ECU will play 18 conference games against eight opponents twice each and two opponents once.

Women’s Cross Country

Duke: The Blue Devils are 10th in the ACC preseason coaches’ poll.

Women’s Soccer

Duke: The 16th-ranked Blue Devils will host the Duke Nike Classic Friday and Sunday.
