No. 2 UNC falls 4-2 at No. 3 Syracuse in ACC opener
SYRACUSE, N.Y. In a battle of unbeaten ACC teams, the second-ranked North Carolina (4-0, 0-1 ACC) field hockey team fell 4-2 Saturday to No. 3 Syracuse (5-0, 1-0) at the Orange’s J.S. Coyne Stadium.
A pair of seniors scored in the first half to give Carolina an early lead. In the 13th minute of play, Nina Notman put UNC on the board on a penalty corner goal, her second of the season. In the 32nd minute, Emily Wold scored on a second effort to put UNC up 2-0.
Carolina outshot the host Orange 6-1 in the first half and had three corners to SU’s one.
In the second half, Syracuse stormed back. The Orange scored on a penalty corner in the 46th minute, then added another in the 58th to tie the score at 2-2. In the 67th minute, Emma Russell scored on a breakaway to give Syracuse the lead. After that, UNC coach Karen Shelton pulled her goalkeeper, junior Shannon Johnson, in favor of an extra field player. The Orange took advantage of the open cage to add one more in the 68th minute.
Cross Country
Duke: The women’s and men’s teams earned a win against N.C. Central in the Bull City Classic in Durham. Both teams scored 15-40.
Meredith: Macy Brinson and Allie Gallagher helped the Avenging Angels claim second behind Louisburg in the Barton Bulldog Cross Country Invitational.
Men’s Golf
N.C. State: The team placed fifth at the Kiawah Island Invitational.
Volleyball
Duke: The team beat UNC Wilmington 3-0 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
N.C. State: The team won 3-1 against host Tulane.
