Academic honors roll in for Duke men’s soccer

The Duke men’s soccer team recently was honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for its work in the classroom during the 2014-15 academic year. The Blue Devils were one of four ACC programs to earn the College Team Academic Award from the organization.

Duke, Boston College, Clemson and Notre Dame all finished with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA last year. The Blue Devils sported the second-highest GPA at 3.29. Duke is one of two ACC programs to have both the men and women’s teams honored.

The Blue Devils landed four players on the All-ACC Academic Team and 21 on the ACC Academic Honor Roll this past year. Sean Davis, the 2014 ACC Midfielder of the Year, was a three-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree, and the four selections were tied for second in the ACC.

Mount Olive: East Wake product Azzam Dhamra scored the final goal as the team took a 3-1 victory over rival Barton College in Wilson on Tuesday night for Conference Carolinas men’s soccer. The Trojans held off a late attack by the Bulldogs in the final 15 minutes of the match.

Cross Country

N.C. State: For the first time this season, both the men’s and women’s teams are ranked in the national U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll. The Wolfpack women jumped up three spots to 13th, while the men entered the rankings for the first time this season at No. 30.

The teams moved up in the polls after sweeping last weekend’s adidas XC Challenge in Cary.

Women’s Bowling

Saint Augustine: Head coach Dorothy Neal has been appointed senior woman administrator, according to athletics director George Williams.

Golf

Campbell: Annelie Sjoholm finished fifth individually, and the Camels placed fifth in the team standings following Wednesday’s final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo.

Lacrosse

Duke: The 2015 men’s lacrosse coaching clinics made their debut Tuesday night in the Murray Building Team Room. The trio of John Danowski, Ron Caputo and Matt Danowski talked Xs and Os, creating a team culture and what Duke does during its preseason training this time of year.

The next clinic is set for Oct. 20. Details about the clinic will be released as soon as a location is set.
