UNC field hockey tops Cavs 8-3
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Gab Major tied a University of North Carolina program record with five goals in a driving rainstorm on Friday, leading the third-ranked Tar Heels to an 8-3 field hockey win at fourth-ranked Virginia. Major added an assist as Carolina posted its sixth consecutive victory.
The Tar Heels ripped off a 7-0 scoring run to take command while holdng the Cavaliers scoreless for more than 50 minutes. Major scored all five of her goals during the 7-0 run.
The Tar Heels improve to 10-1 overall, 3-1 in ACC play this fall. UVA falls to 8-2, 2-2.
Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons’ field hockey team scored five second-half goals to roll past Appalachian State 7-1. Madie Julius, Krysta Wangerin and Jule Grashoff each scored two goals.
Volleyball
UNC: The team swept cross-town rival Duke in the Tar Heels’ ACC home opener. The 3-0 victory marked the 17th straight ACC win for Carolina at Carmichael Arena.
Women’s Soccer
UNC: Joanna Boyles had a goal and an assist and Alexa Newfield tallied her team-leading seventh goal of the campaign as No. 1-ranked North Carolina defeated Boston College 2-0 at Cedar Falls Park.
Cross Country
NC State: Both the men’s and women’s teams finished second in the team standings at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invite on Friday afternoon. The men’s team finished with four athletes in the top-13, and the women had four runners in the top-19, as the Wolfpack passed its first big test of the season.
Football
NCCU: Formerquarterback Earl “Air” Harvey has been announced as a finalist for induction into the Black College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2016.
