East Carolina women take 4th Pinehurst Challege golf title
East Carolina’s women's golf team posted a final-round 1-under 287 Tuesday to win the Pinehurst Challenge with a 54-hole, school-record score of 857.
The Pirates, who won their fourth Pinehurst Challenge team title (2003, 2007-08, 2015), led wire-to-wire with rounds of 287, 283 and 287 for their second straight tournament crown of the season. They ended a 12-year drought by winning the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate on Sept. 29.
Freshman Kate Law carded a career-low score of 211 (70-69-72) to share fifth.
Elon: Senior Emily Brooks and the Phoenix set 54-hole Division I program records as Elon nabbed a third-place finish the Pinehurst Challenge. The Phoenix finished at 2-over 866.
Men’s Soccer
Campbell: Ten days after originally scheduled, the Camels and 11th-ranked Coastal Carolina will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
Elon: After earning a pair of victories last week at home, the 11th-ranked Phoenix will travel to 24th-ranked UNC Wilmington for a key Colonial Athletic Association match Wednesday.
Mount Olive: Kevin Williams Lopez scored a goal during the final five minutes, but the Trojans fell to USC Aiken 2-1 in nonconference men’s soccer at Amon Field.
Wake Forest: For the second time this season, goalkeeper Alec Ferrell has been named the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Week. Ferrell shares the honor with N.C. State keeper Alex McCauley.
Field Hockey
Duke: Redshirt senior goalkeeper Lauren Blazing was selected the ACC Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Blue Devils to weekend victories at No. 10 Boston College and at No. 17 Boston University.
Football
Duke: For the second consecutive week, senior Ross Martin was named a Lou Groza Collegiate Place Kicker Award Star of the Week, according to the Palm Beach (Fla.) County Sports Commission.
Wake Forest: Safety Zach Dancel and punter Alexander Kinal each received Player of the Week honors from the ACC after Saturday’s 3-0 win against Boston College.
Men’s Basketball
Duke: Freshman Brandon Ingram was one of 20 players named to the preseason watch list for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, which is presented by University of Massachusetts and by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Duke: Sophomore guard Grayson Allen was one of 20 players named to the preseason watch list for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award.
N.C. Central: For the second year in a row, the Eagles were picked to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title in the preseason poll.
Shaw: The Bears will hold their Midnight Madness, a celebration of the official opening of the basketball seasons Wednesday at CC Spaulding Gymnasium.
Volleyball
Shaw: The visiting Bears held Fayetteville State to just 29 kills Monday night as they swept the Broncos 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-21) for the first time since 1999.
Women’s Soccer
Duke: After helping the Blue Devils to back-to-back shutouts last week, junior defender Rebecca Quinn was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week.
