Wake Forest’s field hockey team falls to No. 1 Syracuse

The sixth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team fell to No. 1 Syracuse, 6-0, on Saturday at J.S. Coyne Stadium.

Syracuse remained undefeated on the season and improved to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in ACC play. The Demon Deacons are 10-4 this season and 3-2 against ACC opponents.

Alma Fenne tallied a hat trick to lead Syracuse. She scored the first goal just four minutes in to the game. After the Orange pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 31st minute Fenne notched two more goals in the final two minutes of the first half to send Syracuse in to the break with a 5-0 lead.

Syracuse got a second-half goal from Roos Wears to make the final score 6-0.

Jule Grashoff led the Demon Deacons with two shots, including one on goal. Valerie Dahmen made nine saves in the game.

Men’s Cross Country

Duke: Redshirt senior Shaun Thompson posted his second top-10 finish of the season Saturday after placing seventh overall at the 78th annual NCAA Division I Pre-Nationals Invitational held on the eight-kilometer E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park course.

Swimming & Diving

N.C. State: Capitalizing on its first day of success in Los Angeles, the Wolfpack held off host Southern California and Hawai’i in its two-day tri-meet Saturday morning at Uytengsu Aquatic Center.

Volleyball

Mout Olive: The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team hit .312 and held Mount Olive to a .069 output as the Crusaders gained a season sweep of the Trojans with an easy 3-0 road victory this afternoon at Kornegay Arena. Scores were 25-20, 25-19 and 25-15.

Women’s Cross Country

Duke: The Blue Devils posted a strong performance against a competitive field at the 36th annual NCAA Division I Pre-Nationals Invitational Saturday morning on the six-kilometer E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park course in Louisville, Ky., placing 26th overall out of 45 teams.

Meredith: Itzel Gonzalez led the Angels to a fifth place finish among the nine competing teams at Saturday'sSouth/Southeast Regional Preview meet at Shenandoah University.

Women’s Soccer

Meredith: Avenging Angels extended their winning streak to seven Saturday as they shut out the Averett Cougars 2-0.

Mount Olive: Ellie Barnes put the team ahead to stay in the first period as the Trojans took a 2-0 win over Lees-McRae on Senior Day at Amon Field in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer.
