Former Duke star Jeff Mullins to speak in Raleigh

Former Duke basketball star Jeff Mullins will be the keynote speaker Wednesday at the Raleigh Sports Club.

Mullins, a native of Lexington, Ky., averaged 21.9 points per game in his Blue Devils career (1960-64). Duke retired his No. 44 jersey in 1994.

In 2002, Mullins was named to the ACC’s 50th anniversary men's basketball team as one of its 50 greatest players.

Mullins was a member of the U.S. Olympic team that won gold at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The St. Louis Hawks selected Mullins with the fifth overall pick in the 1964 NBA draft. After two seasons, he joined the Golden State Warriors, where he was a three-time All-Star.

Mullins also coached the Charlotte 49ers from 1985 to 1996.

Raleigh Sports Club meetings are held in Bradley Hall at Highland UMC, 1901 Ridge Road. Doors open at 10:50 a.m. Buffet lines begin at 11:30 a.m., and the hourlong meeting begins at noon. Attendance fee is $15 for members and $25 for guests.

Men’s Soccer

Duke: The weekly awards continue to roll in for Zach Mathers. The senior captain, already selected to the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer teams of the week, has been voted the ACC Offensive Player of the Week following his seven-point performance Friday against No. 23 N.C. State.

Wake Forest: Freshman defender Sam Raben has been tabbed this week’s ACC Defender of the Week.

Elon: Senior Eduardo Alvarez was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week.

Women’s Soccer

Duke: Sophomore Imani Dorsey and junior Christina Gibbons each earned ACC Player of the Week accolades Tuesday. Dorsey earned ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while Gibbons was selected the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Women’s Lacrosse

Duke: The team commemorated the 20th year of its program over the weekend, welcoming back more than 80 alumnae to Durham for the celebration. Blue Devils alumnae spanning all 20 classes got back on the field Saturday morning to scrimmage the current Duke squad.

Men’s Lacrosse

Duke: The second installment of this season’s coaching clinics is set for Wednesday at 7 p.m. The clinic also will be streamed live on GoDuke.com for out-of-town coaches who would like to watch and learn.

Volleyball

Shaw: Kelly Murphy and Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez earned Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) weekly honors.

Swimming and Diving

East Carolina: Junior diver Ashley Sams has been recognized by The American as the Female Diver-of-the-Week for the third time in her career.

Wrestling

Duke: Two-time All-American Conner Hartmann will begin the season ranked third by InterMat. The redshirt senior finished sixth at the NCAA championships a year ago.

Cross Country

Elon: Rookie Nick Ciolkowski was named Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.
