College Notebook: NCSU Women’s Swimming and Diving ranked No. 13 in first CSCAA Poll
In the first top-25 poll of the 2015-16 season, the NC State swimming and diving team is listed at No. 13, as announced by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Tuesday.
NC State is one of six ACC teams to be listed among the rankings. Joining the Wolfpack is: No. 4 Virginia, No. 5 UNC-Chapel Hill, No. 8 Louisville, No. 22 Duke and No. 25 Florida State.
This season, the Pack has faced or is set to compete against several of the teams listed among the top 25. The Wolfpack women defeated Florida State, 200-99, on Saturday in its home opener, and prior to the dual meet took down Southern Cal, who is listed at No. 14 in the polls.
Duke: Junior Peter Kropp claimed ACC Male Swimmer of the Week accolades for the second time this season, garnering the honor Tuesday after leading the Blue Devils to dual meet victories over Florida State and Queens University of Charlotte.
NCSU: Senior Rachel Mumma was named ACC Female Diver of the Week honors, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
Field Hockey
Wake Forest: The fifth-ranked Demon Deacons picked up a 2-0 victory over Davidson on Tuesday at Kentner Stadium. Freshman Megan Anderson and senior Krysta Wangerin scored for the Demon Deacons.
Football
Duke: For the second time this season, redshirt senior safety Jeremy Cash has been named the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week. Cash booked 11 tackles, 2.5 hits for lost yardage, one sack, one quarterback hurry and one pass breakup as Duke defeated Virginia Tech 45-43 in four overtimes Saturday.
Men’s Basketball
Duke: Blue Devils Athletics and IMG College announced Tuesday that Ameritas Life Insurance Corp. will serve as the title sponsor for the Ameritas Insurance Classic, set for Madison Square Garden on Dec. 19.
Elon: Senior guard Tanner Samson was named as an honorable mention on the 2015-16 CAA Preseason All-Conference team. The Phoenix was selected 10th in the poll, as the Phoenix enters its second season in the CAA.
Men’s Golf
Campbell: Craig Hornberger won individual honors and the Camels claimed the team title after Tuesday’s final round of the Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate men’s golf tournament.
Mt. Olive: Nick Adams and Sebastian Andersen tied for seventh out of 123 golfers as the Trojans tied for eighth out of 22 teams at the McDonough Cup at Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando, Fla.
NCSU: Led by top-five finishes from Stephen Franken (4th) and David Cooke (5th), the Wolfpack placed third of 15 teams at the 2015 Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational.
Men’s Soccer
Duke: Sophomore center back Markus Fjørtoft has been named the ACC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week following the Blue Devils 2-0 week.
Track & Field
Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons’ indoor season begins at home on Dec. 5 at the JDL College Kick-Off Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Women’s Basketball
Elon: After finishing tied for third and reaching the championship semifinals in its first year in the Colonial Athletic Association, the Phoenix has been selected fourth in the 2015 CAA Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll.
Women’s Golf
Campbell: With three golfers among the top 20 individuals, the Camels finished third out of 20 teams following Tuesday’s final round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Women’s Soccer
Mt. Olive: Nichole Poppe started a five goal surge in the second half as the University of Mount Olive powered to a 6-0 victory over Chowan University Tuesday afternoon in Murfreesboro, N.C., for non-conference women’s soccer.
NCSU: The Wolfpack hosts its final home match of the 2015 seasonon Wednesday, welcoming No. 1 Virginia to Dail Soccer Field for a 5 p.m. kickoff. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
