4 area ACC schools help fight hunger
No. 22 UNC beats Wingate in women’s hoops
North Carolina opened the 2015-16 campaign with a 59-48 victory over Wingate in an exhibition Wednesday night at Carmichael Arena.
Destinee Walker’s 3-pointer with less than 3 minutes left in regulation gave the No. 22 Tar Heels some breathing room against a feisty Bulldogs team coached by former UNC assistant Ann Hancock.
Walker would make a steal and go in for two more points on the ensuing play to put UNC up 54-48 with 2 minutes, 17 seconds left. The Tar Heels finished the game on an 11-0 run.
Hillary Summers scored 15 points to lead Carolina, while Walker added 13 points in her debut. Jamie Cherry tossed in 10 points.
UNC will host Mount Olive at 6 p.m. Monday in the final exhibition before the regular season begins against Gardner-Webb on Nov. 13.
4 area ACC schools help fight hunger
In effort to help fight hunger in North Carolina, four in-state collegiate rivals are forming a unique bond this 2015-16 athletic season. The “Million Meals Challenge” – a banner initiative in collaboration with Harris Teeter and NC Food Banks – focuses on generating yearlong support from students, fans, alumni and campus communities of Duke, N.C. State, UNC and Wake Forest.
The schools will be reaching out individually to their students, alumni and campus communities to help donate their time, money and/or food. A food drive will be held during an ACC men’s basketball game at each school.
Donations can be made online, and food donations can be made at select Harris Teeter locations, as well as at the next Wake Forest home game set for Nov. 28, when the Deacons face off against Duke.
