Duke’s Martin, McCaffrey to play in Collegiate Bowl
Duke kicker Ross Martin and wide receiver Max McCaffrey will participate in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, scheduled for Jan. 23 at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Eastern, and the game will be televised by ESPN2.
Martin has played in 52 games and owns nearly every Duke kicking record. He is the Blue Devils’ career leader in points (416), field goals (75), extra points (191) and consecutive PATs (147). Among the NCAA’s active kickers, Martin ranks first in field goals and second in points while standing second in ACC history in career points and third in field goals.
McCaffrey has played in 52 games and made 113 receptions for 1,299 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has scored a single-season best five touchdowns this year to boost his overall total to 12. He is the 11th player in Duke history to register three seasons with at least three TD receptions.
Men’s Soccer
Hermann Trophy: UNC senior defender Jonathan Campbell and Wake Forest freshman standout Jack Harrison have been named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious award in college soccer. Six finalists (three men, three women) will be named on Dec. 11. The award will be presented Jan. 8 in St. Louis.
Women’s Soccer
Duke: Toni Payne and EJ Proctor have been selected to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week after helping guide the third-seeded Blue Devils past host Stanford, 3-2, on penalty kicks last week in the NCAA tournament. The team moved on to the NCAA College Cup for the third time in school history.
Men’s Basketball
Wake Forest: The latest edition of Fox Sports South’s Emmy Award-winning series “Driven” will feature coach Danny Manning and the basketball program. The show will debut Thursday at 10:30 p.m.
Women’s Basketball
Raleigh Sports Club: Elon coach Charlotte Smith, a former UNC star, will be the special guest speaker at the Raleigh Sports Club. She was named most outstanding player of the NCAA women’s tournament in 1994 when she hit the championship-winning shot for the Tar Heels at the buzzer.
The meeting will be held at noon in Bradley Hall in Highland UMC, 1901 Ridge Road. Doors open at 10:50 a.m. Buffet lines open at 11:30 a.m.Attendance fee is $15 for members and $25 for guests.
Shaw: Senior center Eboni Ross was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Newcomer of the Week. Ross tallied 36 points and 24 rebounds during the Thanksgiving Classic at Virginia State.
Volleyball
N.C. State: Bryan Bunn has stepped down as coach after six seasons to pursue other professional opportunities.
Miscellaneous
Durham Sports Club: Dr. Frank Bonner, president of the Big South Conference and president of Gardner-Webb University, will be the guest speaker Wednesday at noon at Croasdaile Country Club.
Durham Sports Club meetings are open to the public. The cost is $25 per person, which includes lunch.
