Duke’s Jones is top pick in lacrosse draft

Duke senior midfielder Myles Jones was selected by expansion team Atlanta Blaze as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2016 Major League Lacrosse Draft this afternoon at the Baltimore Convention Center. Jones is the second Blue Devil to be picked first in the MLL draft and is the first choice for the Blaze in its inaugural season.

Joining Jones with the Blaze as the No. 10 overall pick is Duke midfielder Deemer Class.

UNC: The opening scrimmage of the 2016 season, slated for Saturday at noon versus High Point University had been canceled and will not be rescheduled.

Basketball

Raleigh Sports Club: Mike Gminski is the keynote speaker for the 52nd Anniversary Raleigh Sports Club Annual Banquet on Wednesday, April 6, 2016. Gminski played four seasons with the Duke Blue Devils, from 1977 to 1980. The RSC will start taking reservations in February 2016.

Saint Augustine/Shaw: Because of inclement weather, the teams have postponed their men’s and women’s games scheduled for Saturday. The men’s game will be 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1 at Saint Augustine’s Emery Gymnasium, at the conclusion of the 5:30 p.m. women’s game.

Women’s tennis

NC State: The team has updated its 2016 schedule including a rescheduled season opener. The Wolfpack is set to open the season Monday at 4 p.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center against East Carolina.

The original doubleheader season opener scheduled for January 23 against Winthrop and North Carolina A&T was canceled. Tentatively, the team will replace the original East Carolina match with a make-up match vs. Winthrop Saturday, April 9 at 4 p.m in Raleigh.

Baseball

Duke: Junion right-hander Bailey Clark was listed No. 48 on D1Baseball's list of the top 300 college prospects as released by the organization Friday, Jan. 22.

Miscellaneous

UNC: For the third year in a row, Carolina Athletics will honor pioneering former student-athletes with the Tar Heel Trailblazers award. This year’s honorees are Sharon Couch-Fikes and Phil Ford.

The award recognizes individuals who paved the way for success in all aspects of the student-athlete experience. The Trailblazers will be honored at halftime of the men’s basketball game on Feb. 20 vs. Miami and at a reception afterward.
