Deacons’ Will Zalatoris gets exemption to compete in PGA Tour event
Wake Forest sophomore Will Zalatoris received a sponsor’s exemption to compete in the 2016 AT&T Byron Nelson, the PGA Tour event held May 16-22 at the TPC Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas in Irving, Texas.
The tournament will be the second PGA Tour event of Zalatoris’ career. Last year, he made his debut at the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles after winning the Northern Trust Open Collegiate Showcase at the Riviera Country Club.
The tournament, whose past winners include Wake Forest alumnus Lanny Wadkins, is located 20 miles from Zalatoris’ home in Plano, Texas.
Zalatoris enters the spring season leading the Deacons in scoring average at 70.00 and is ranked No. 11 in the Golfstat individual rankings. He will return to action later this month as he looks to defend his Northern Trust Open Collegiate Showcase title in Los Angeles.
Track and field
North Carolina: Former Tar Heel Vanneisha Ivy was inducted into the Indiana Track and Field Hall of Fame on Friday. The former Tar Heel standout grew up in Muncie, Ind.
Women’s basketball
N.C. State: Redshirt junior guard Dominique Wilson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference and College Sports Madness Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 25-31.
Men’s basketball
NC State: For the third time this season, Anthony “Cat” Barber has been voted the ACC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. The ACC’s leading scorer at 23.1 points per game, Barber averaged 33.0 points and 4.5 assists as the Pack split a pair of games last week.
East Carolina: For his efforts last week in two games, senior guard Prince Williams earned a spot on the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll. It is the first time in his career that he has been accorded the honor.
Baseball
Raleigh Sports Club: Carl Lancaster, legendary baseball coach at Mount Olive will be the special guest speaker Wednesday at the Raleigh Sports Club.
Meetings are held in Bradley Hall in Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road at the intersection with Lake Boone Trail. Doors open at 10:50 a.m. Fee is $15 for members and $25 for guests.
Men’s lacrosse
North Carolina: The team is ranked eighth in the opening Cacade/Maverik media poll coordinated by Inside Lacrosse Magazine.
Women’s lacrosse
Duke: The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association and Inside Lacrosse released their Division I preseason polls Monday. The Blue Devils were tabbed fourth in the IWLCA’s Division I Pre-Season poll and fifth in Inside Lacrosse’s first media poll of the 2016 season.
Mount Olive: The program earned its second preseason national ranking in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Preseason Poll it was announced on Monday. The team was selected as the preseason No. 12 ranked team in Division II.
Women’s tennis
Wake Forest: TennisRecruiting.net unveiled its Winter Rankings of the Top 25 Women’s Recruiting Classes for the Class of 2016 on Monday. With Lexi Franco and Chandler Carter signed to National Letters of Intent, the Demon Deacons checked in at No. 13 on the list.
