Seniors lead No. 3 NC State in wrestling win over No. 5 Missouri
N.C. State’s two seniors made the most of their final home dual, helping the No. 3 Wolfpack pull off a come-from-behind 18-17 win over No. 5 Missouri on Sunday.
No. 4 Tommy Gantt (157 pounds) recorded his fourth straight win over a ranked foe, and Nick Gwiazdowski (285) went into his last home match needing a tech fall or a pin for a Wolfpack team win. The two-time defending NCAA champs ended the dual in the first period with a dominating 17-1 performance.
Gwiazdowski dominated James Romero from the opening whistle, and picked up a 17-1 first-period technical fall, scoring five points for the Wolfpack in the comeback win. Gwiazdowski improves to 26-0 on the season, and sits at 54-0 all-time in duals at N.C. State. He’s won 81 straight matches.
Gantt remained perfect with a 5-2 win over Missouri’s No. 29 Le’Roy Barnes. Gantt is 21-0 on the season, and is 8-0 versus ranked foes. Each of his last four wins have come against ranked opponents.
The Wolfpack, who lost their first match of the season Friday against Virginia Tech, could be selected for the National Duals and face the Big Ten next weekend.
Softball
UNC: Carolina softball closed the Texas Classic on a high note, as junior Kendra Lynch hurled her second complete-game shutout of the weekend to lead the Tar Heels to a 5-0 victory over Arkansas. The win lifts Carolina to 2-3, while Arkansas falls to 1-4
N.C. State: Sophomore pitcher Harli Hubbard earned her first collegiate start and threw a complete game to help the No. 23 team earn a 7-5 win Sunday afternoon against Coastal Carolina.
Track and Field
NC State: The Wolfpack took down another historic record, as Megan Moye ran to a new indoor mile record and the team wrapped up competition at the Husky Classic and Tyson Invitational.
Field Hockey
Duke: Blue Devil All-American Lauren Blazing earned her first international cap with the United States women’s senior national field hockey team Friday, taking the field in the finale of a four-matched capped tournament against Canada
Lacrosse
Duke: Senior attackman Case Matheis scored three goals while junior goalkeeper Danny Fowler posted 14 saves as No. 3 Duke mens’s team held off a late Lehigh rally to earn a 13-11 triumph over the visiting Mountain Hawks on Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
UNC: Maire McCool scored a career-high five goals and Molly Hendrick had four goals as North Carolina (3-0) beat San Diego State, 20-7, in women’s lacrosse on Sunday afternoon at a cold Fetzer Field.
Raleigh Sports Club
Whit Babcock, Athletics Director off Virginia Tech, will be the special guest speaker. Elly Henes Senior, who is committed to run at N.C. State, will be recognized as the Student Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
