Wolfpack baseball drops opener 5-0 to ODU
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. N.C. State baseball dropped its season opener 5-0 against Old Dominion on Friday at TicketReturn.com Field.
The Wolfpack (0-1) fell behind 2-0 in the first on a pair of walks and a two-RBI single. In the third, sixth, and seventh, ODU (1-0) added single runs to extend the advantage.
Stephen Pitarra started at second and contributed the first two hits of his collegiate career, a pair of singles. Preston Palmeiro added the Pack’s only other hit, a single in the first.
Duke: The Blue Devils took an early two-run lead before California scored five unanswered runs down the stretch to upend the Blue Devils, 5-2, in the 2016 season opener at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Duke (0-1) kept California (1-0) off the scoreboard for the first five innings and limited the Bears to just two hits in that span.
Saint Augustine’s: Infielder Carey Cheek was named CIAA Offensive Player of the Week. This is the first CIAA weekly award this season for Cheek, who leads the CIAA in batting average (.571), hits (8) and on base percentage (.563).
Men’s Basketball
Raleigh Sports Club: Former NBA and Duke star Mike Gminski is keynote speaker at the 52nd Anniversary Annual Banquet.
The RSC will give updates periodically and will start taking reservations in February 2016.
Women’s Basketball
Duke: For the second straight year, redshirt freshman Lyneé Belton has seen her season come to an end early as the 6-3 forward had surgery Thursday. Belton had her left meniscus debridement performed by team physician Dr. Alison Toth.
Football
Saint Augustine’s: The university removed the interim tag and officially named Tim Chavous as head football coach.
