Duke’s Grayson Allen honored as All-American
Duke’s Grayson Allen added All-America honors to his decorated sophomore season on Monday morning, earning second-team recognition from USA Today.
Allen leads Duke and ranks fifth among major-conference players in scoring with an average of 21.5 points per game. His +17.1-point scoring improvement from a year ago is on pace to set a new ACC record for year-to-year scoring increase. He has scored in double figures 29 times in 31 games this season, including 16 20-point efforts and four games with more than 30 points.
He is currently on a steak of 20 consecutive games with double-figure points and was not held to fewer than 15 points in 18 regular-season ACC games this season.
Allen is shooting 47.5 percent from the floor, a team-high 42.3 percent from three-point range and 83.0 percent from the free throw line. He averages 4.5 rebounds to go along with team highs of 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals per contest.
He ranks second in the ACC in scoring (21.5), fourth in three-point percentage (.423), fifth in three-pointers per game (2.39), sixth in free throw percentage (.830), eighth in field goal percentage (.475) and ninth in steals (1.29).
Men’s Basketball
Duke: The Blue Devils’ Grayson Allen and Brandon Ingram continued to rack up postseason awards on Monday when both received ACC honors from the league’s head coaches.
Allen was named a first-team All-ACC selection by the coaches in addition to receiving Most Improved Co-Player of the Year honors, sharing the award with Clemson’s Jaron Blossomgame.
Ingram was the coaches’ pick for ACC Freshman of the Year, as well as a second-team All-ACC selection and a member of the ACC All-Freshman Team.
Wake Forest: Demon Deacons’ guard Bryant Crawford was named to the Coaches’ All-ACC Freshman Team, the league announced Monday. It is the second All-ACC freshman team accolade for Crawford, who received the same honor from the league’s media on Sunday.
Women’s Basketball
Duke: A week after the Blue Ribbon Panel selected standouts Rebecca Greenwell and Azurá Stevens to the All-ACC team, the league’s 15 head coaches named the duo to their All-ACC team Monday.
NC State: Junior guards Miah Spencer and Dominique Wilson have been named to the Head Coaches’ 2016 All-ACC Second Team, the league office announced Monday morning.
Wake Forest: Freshman Ariel Stephenson has been selected to the ACC All-Freshman Team, the conference announced Monday morning. The team was compiled through voting by the conference’s head coaches.
Elon: Nikki McDonald has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office today, March 7.
Baseball
NC State/Wake Forest: The Wolfpack’s Chance Shepard and the Demon Deacons’ Will Craig have been voted the ACC Baseball Co-Players of the Week.
Softball
NC State: For the first time in her career, Molly Hutchison has been tabbed the ACC Softball Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office.
Golf
Raleigh Sports Club: On Wednesday at Bradley Hall in Highland UMC, NC Sports Hall of Fame Golfer Paul Simson will be the special guest speaker. Doors open at 10:50 a.m. Buffet lines open at 11:30 am and the meeting is noon until 1 pm.
Men’s Tennis
NC State: The No. 40 Wolfpack earned its biggest win of the season so far, defeating No. 7 Wake Forest 4-3 in Winston-Salem.
Women’s Tennis
Shaw: The Lady Bears downed the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University, 7-2 on Sunday to conclude the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tennis Round-Up at Lions Park.
