Wolfpack’s Ipsen qualifies for Summer Olympics
Anton Ipsen, a distance freestyle specialist for N.C. State, earned his first Olympic Games berth in the 400-meter freestyle Wednesday at the Danish Open.
The sophomore from Birkerod had to earn a top-two finish and better the Olympic ‘A’ standard in the event, and he won the final session with a time of 3 minutes, 48.39 seconds. His performance stands as the 13th-fastest time in the world in 2016.
His accomplishment marks the second Wolfpack athlete to qualify for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Simonas Bilis is slated represent Lithuania in the 50- and 100-meter freestyles.
Ipsen also will look to earn a spot on Denmark’s Olympic team in the 1,500 freestyle this week. He is the No. 3 seed in the event.
