Duke takes down No. 1 Miami in baseball
DURHAM The Blue Devils scored nine runs over the first two innings and snapped No. 1 Miami’s 12-game winning streak with a 12-5 decision Saturday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The win marked Duke’s (20-16. 7-10 ACC) first win over a top-ranked team since defeating then-No. 1 North Carolina in March of 2009.
Coach Chris Pollard's club banged out 16 hits, led by freshman Zack Kone who went 5-for-5 with 3 RBI, including a triple and a home run, finishing a double short of the cycle.
“Kone was really good in all phases,” said Pollard. “He drove a ball down the right field line. He showed off his speed with the two infield hits. Showed off his power hitting the home run. What a ballgame.”
Kone was one of four Blue Devils with two or more hits. Jimmy Herron was 3-for-5, while Jack Labosky and Chris Proctor both went 2-for-4 on the day. The Blue Devils slugged three home runs, receiving solo shots from Kone, Labosky and Cris Perez.
Trent Swart pitched the first 2 and two third innings before giving way to Kellen Urbon (5-1). Urbon earned the win after pitching four and a third. nnings, allowing three runs on two hits.
Campbell: Zach Minnick’s RBI double in the bottom of the ninth gave the Camels a 2-1 win over visiting Liberty.
UNC: Nate Eikhoff landed the decisive blow with a three-run triple in the third inning, and Virginia held on for a 7-4 win over the Tar Heels Friday night at Davenport Field in Charlottesville, Va.
N. C. State: Josh McLain went 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI as the Wolfpack notched their seventh straight win, 8-3 win over Georgia Tech Friday night in Atlanta.
Women’s Lacrosse
UNC: The Tar Heels notched their second straight ACC regular season title with a 12-11 win at Syracuse. Ela Hazar led the way offensively with two goals and four assists for a career-high six points. Coach Jenny Levy’s squad has won nine in a row. With one game left in the regular season, the Tar Heels are 12-2, a perfect 6-0 in conference play.
Duke: The Blue Devils outshot Notre Dame 34-21, but surrendered the game tying goal with 18 seconds left in regulation before losing in overtime, 10-9.
Campbell: The Camels dropped their first game in its last five outings with a 15-4 loss at Big South Conference leader Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C.
Softball
St. Augustine Marley Parker fired her second consecutive no-hitter as The Falcons upended Shaw University 8-0 in both games of a CIAA softball doubleheader at Worthdale Park on Saturday
Elon: The Phoenix split its CAA doubleheader at Towson on Saturday, winning the opener 3-2, before falling to the Tigers, 7-3 in the nightcap.
