Wolfpack baseball falls at Ga. Tech

No. 12 N.C. State saw its eight-game winning streak snapped, losing 16-7 to No. 19 Georgia Tech on Sunday at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets led 4-0 when Chance Shepard’s grand slam tied it in the top fourth. Brock Deatherage followed with a blast to grant the Pack a 5-4 advantage. Deatherage finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with his third bomb of the season. Shepard’s homer was his 10th of the year.

Georgia Tech scored one in the fifth and six in the sixth to take an 11-5 lead.

Wolfpack starter Ryan Williamson (6-1) took the loss on 5 2/3 innings, seven earned on seven hits and four walks, striking out four.

Baseball

UNC: The team committed a season-high 13 walks from their pitching staff as Virginia grabbed a series win with a 15-9 victory in Charlottesville. Eli Sutherland drove in four runs, and Brian Miller had a career high five hits for the Tar Heels.

Duke: Zack Collins launched a three-run third-inning homerr and top ranked Miami received RBI singles from four different players to capture the series final, 9-0, over the Blue Devils Sunday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Hurricanes starter Danny Garcia scattered eight hits over seven innings for his sixth win of the season.

Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons clinched its first series against Florida State in more than a decade with a 4-2 home win on Sunday, taking the series two games to one. Will Craig homered and pitched two scoreless innings for his fifth save of the season.

Men’s Golf

N.C. State: Led by senior David Cooke’s third career individual victory in his final home tournament, the Wolfpack captured the team title at the 2016 Wolfpack Spring Intercollegiate.

Cooke recorded a career-best score of 198 (-15) to earn a two-stroke victory over No. 22 Adrian Meronk of East Tennessee State. As a team, the Wolfpack posted a three-round score of 831 (-21) to defeat USF by eight strokes and Virginia by 20.

Women’s Golf

East Carolina: Paced by senior Frida Gustafson Spang, The Pirates are tied atop the leaderboard with Memphis after the round one of the 2016 American Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championships in Palm Coast, Florida.

Spang leads the individual competition after a 1 under par 71 on Sunday.

Men’s Tennis

UNC: The Tar Heels closed out the regular season Sunday afternoon with a resounding 6-1 win over host Duke, improving their regular-season record to 24-3 and finishing ACC play 9-3.

The highlight of the day came from Brett Clark, the only senior in the lineup. Clark cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 in the final regular season match of his career.

Women’s Tennis

Duke: The eighth-ranked Blue Devils picked up a 5-2 win over 28th-ranked Clemson. The doubles team of Samantha Harris and Kaitlyn McCarthy started the match with a 6-0 win and Duke never looked back. Harris and McCarthy are 17-5 as a duo this season. The Blue Devils head into the ACC Tournament next week with an 18-5 overall record, 11-3 in the ACC.

Men’s Swimming

N.C. State: Junior Soren Dahl secured an Olympic Games berth on Sunday at the 2016 Danish Open. He will represent his native Denmark in the 4x200m freestyle relay in Rio de Janeiro this August. Dahl earned his spot with a top-four finish in the 200m free event, posting a mark of 1:49.12.
