Notebook: Former Duke third baseman Jordan Betts promoted to Class AA
Former Duke baseball standout and All-ACC third baseman Jordan Betts was assigned to Class AA Portland on Monday. Betts belted a bases-clearing double in his Sea Dogs debut Monday against Trenton.
In five games with Class A Salem this season, Betts was hitting .348 (8-for-23) with four doubles, a home run and six RBIs.
The Boston Red Sox took Betts in the 18th round (No. 554) of the 2014 Major League draft. He became the first Blue Devils third baseman chosen since Jeff Becker was selected in the 20th round in 1998 by the Milwaukee Brewers.
A Wilmington native, Betts was the first Duke baseball player to earn back-to-back all-ACC distinction since Vaughn Schill in 1998-99. Betts finished the 2014 season ranked 15th in the ACC in batting average (.316), second in doubles (20) and sixth in slugging percentage (.515). For his career, Betts played in 217 games and registered a .272 batting average with 69 doubles, six triples and 17 home runs.
Football
Duke: Coach David Cutcliffe will be honored by the New York Yankees on May 13 and throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game against the Chicago White Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Women’s Tennis
Shaw: The Bears team picked up a 7-0 win Monday against Fayetteville State to conclude the regular season as the CIAA Southern Division champions for the 17th consecutive year.
Coach Sunday Enitan also was named the CIAA Coach of the Week on Tuesday.
Women’s Track And Field
N.C. State: Megan Moye was named the ACC’s Track Performer of the Week on Tuesday. Moye capped a successful weekend at the Charlotte Invitational, where she set two personal bests, a school record and the nation’s fifth-best mark in the 1,500 meters.
Duke: Senior Megan Clark was tabbed an ACC Field Performer of the Week.
Men’s Track and Field
Duke: Graduate student Shaun Thompson and redshirt senior Thomas Lang swept the ACC accolades as ACC Track Performer of the Week and ACC Field Performer of the Week honors, respectively.
Women’s Lacrosse
North Carolina: Ela Hazar was the ACC Offensive Player of the Week.
Golf
Campbell: With three golfers among the top eight individuals, the Camels finished as runner-up after Tuesday's final round of the Big South Conference championship at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C. Liberty won the team title and the Big South's automatic berth in the NCAA regionals.
Duke: The Golf Channel announced Duke alumna Amanda Blumenherst will join its broadcast team for the 2016 NCAA Championship that will be take place May 20-25 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Field Hockey
Duke: Laura Gentile, a 1994 graduate and the founder and current senior vice president of espnW, received the Futrell Award for Outstanding Achievement in Communications and Journalism on Monday evening.
