Ex-Duke fencer honored

U.S. fencer and Blue Devil alumnae Ibtihaj Muhammad was named to TIME’s 100 Most Influential People list, announced Thursday. She will represent the United States this August at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Muhammad will make American history. becoming the first U.S. Olympian to wear a hijab during competition, the headscarf traditionally worn by Muslim women.

The U.S. Olympic fencing team was formally announced April 11 at the USA Fencing Division I National Championships in Richmond, Va., but Muhammad mathematically secured her spot on the women’s saber squad in February.

During her career with the Blue Devils, Muhammad was a three-time All-America selection in women’s saber. The Maplewood, N.J., native qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championships three consecutive seasons, highlighted by a sixth place finish as a junior in 2006.

Men’s Tennis

N.C. State: The Wolfpack topped Clemson 4-2 in the second round of the ACC Tournament. They’ll face top seed Virginia Friday in the quarterfinals.

Duke: The Blue Devils finished their season with an 11-14 record, losing 4-2 to Notre Dame in round two of the ACC Tournament.

Shaw: The team ranked eighth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region Poll on Wednesday afternoon announced by the NCAA.

Women’s Tennis

Wake Forest: The eighth-seeded team blanked No. 9-seeded Virginia Tech, 4-0, in the second round of the ACC Tournament at Cary Tennis Park in Cary. The Demon Deacons will take on top-seeded North Carolina in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 9 a.m.

Junior Kimmy Guerin was also named Second Team All-ACC, the conference office announced Thursday morning. The all-conference selection is the second of the Weston, Conn. native’s career.

UNC: Junior Hayley Carter has been selected as the 2016 ACC Player of the Year, announced by the conference Thursday.

NC State: Wolfpack standout Martina Frantova has been named to the 2016 All-ACC Second Team, as announced by the league office Thursday morning. However, tenth-seeded NC State’s ACC Championship run came to a close Thursday afternoon when it fell 4-3 to No. 7 seed Syracuse in the second round of tournament play.

Duke: Senior Beatrice Capra garnered All-ACC First Team honors, while junior Chalena Scholl and freshman Kaitlyn McCarthy were each named to the second team. Sophomore Samantha Harris received All-ACC Third Team recognition, and freshman Ellyse Hamlin appeared on the third team of the all-conference squad.

Women’s Golf

Duke: Head coach Dan Brooks announced Thursday the signing of international standout Ana Belac to a national letter of intent. Belac, who hails from Portoroz, Slovenia, will be a freshman in the fall with the Blue Devils.
