Duke guard Allen has surgery

Duke sophomore guard Grayson Allen underwent successful inguinal hernia repair surgery Friday at Duke University Hospital.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Theodore N. Pappas, gastrointestinal surgeon at Duke University Medical Center. Typical recovery time for the procedure is four weeks.

Named an All-American by The Sporting News, the Associated Press and NABC in 2016, Allen led Duke in both scoring (21.6 points per game) and assists (3.5 per game) as a sophomore. He also earned second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 2016.

Baseball

NC State: Friday’s game against N.C. A&T has been canceled because of to rain. The Wolfpack will return to action 1 p.m. Saturday against the Aggies at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro.

Duke: Friday’s series opener against Virginia Tech at Calfee Park in Pulaski, Va., has been postponed. The two teams will now meet in a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday at English Field at Union Park.

Elon: The CAA game between the Phoenix and Hofstra Pride scheduled for Friday was postponed.

Volleyball

Wake Forest: Volleyball coach Ken Murczek has resigned. Assistant coach Lindsay Allman will serve as the interim head coach, and the search for a new coach will begin immediately.

Women’s Tennis

UNC/Wake Forest: Newly minted ACC Player of the Year Hayley Carter won the clinching match to send the top seed Tar Heels to a 4-1 victory over eighth seed Wake Forest on Friday at the ACC Championship from Cary Tennis Park.

Men’s Tennis

NC State: No. 44 Wolfpack fell 4-1 to No. 1 Virginia. The Pack went down early but made a strong comeback late. The comeback attempt came short, as NC State moves to 18-14 (5-7 ACC). The team will await an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The Pack is aiming to make its fifth-straight NCAA Championships appearance.

Track and Field

Duke: Senior Michael Foley led a contingent of Blue Devils in the men’s hammer throw with a second-place finish, breaking his own school record in the process with a throw of 195-5 (59.56m), more than five feet farther than his previous mark of 190-0 (57.92m).

Saint Augustine’s: Shakinah Brooks and Kirvano Handfield won individual titles on the first day of the CIAA Outdoor Men’s and Women’s Championships at Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte. .

Women’s Golf

Duke: The fourth-ranked team is preparing for the NCAA Regional Selection show Monday live on Golf Channel. The Blue Devils will receive their 24th consecutive bid to play in NCAA Regional action Monday and will travel to either Sanford, Calif., Baton Rouge, La., Bryan, Texas or Shoal Creek, Ala.. The regional dates are May 5-7.

Softball

N.C. State: Former players and coaches of the program will be recognized at Saturday’s games when the team hosts Boston College at Dail Stadium on Alumnae Weekend.

Women’s Lacrosse

Campbell: The team is set to close out its record breaking regular season on Saturday by playing host to Big South rival Longwood at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, the Camels will honor its six seniors who will be playing their final regular season game at Barker-Lane Stadium.
