Notebook: Florida State ousts UNC in ACC softball semifinals

Top-seeded Florida State scored four runs in the third inning and cruised to a 7-1 victory over No. 5 seed North Carolina in the ACC softball tournament semifinals Friday at N.C. State’s Dail Softball Stadium.

Meghan King pitched four innings in relief for the win. Jessica Warren went 2-for-3 with four RBIs for Florida State.

The Seminoles (47-8) advance to Saturday’s title game.

North Carolina threatened early, loading the bases in the second with no outs. But Jessica Burroughs struck out the next three batters to get out of trouble.

UNC's run came in the fifth when Berlynne Delamora doubled in Taylor Wike.

Kendra Lynch (27-17) pitched five for North Carolina (31-23).

Women’s Tennis

Duke: The ninth-ranked Blue Devils opened the NCAA championships by defeating Virginia Commonwealth 4-0 at Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham. The Blue Devils will face No. 24 Texas at noon Saturday.

UNC: The third-seeded Tar Heels cruised to a 4-0 over East Tennessee State in the first round of the NCAA championship. UNC will play Northwestern at 3 p.m. Saturday in Chapel Hill.

N.C. State: The Wolfpack’s season came to a close with a 4-1 loss to No. 23 Arizona State in the first round of the NCAA regional in Auburn, Ala. The Pack finished the year 15-12.

Wake Forest: The Deacons dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 40 Baylor in the first round of the NCAA tournament at the University of Georgia, but the team’s 19-10 record is its best since 2002.

Women’s Lacrosse

Duke: Kyra Haney scored four goals and Maddy Acton three as the Blue Devils topped Loyola (Md.) in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Duke will play North Carolina on Sunday.

Mount Olive: Attacker Claire Wigler was named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association NCAA Division II All-South Region second team. She is the only two-time all-region selection in school history.

Womem’s Golf

Duke: Sophomore Leona Maguire has been named one of four PING Women’s Golf Coaches Association Division I Player of the Year candidates. The award will be announced after the NCAA Championship on May 20-25 in Eugene, Ore.

Swimming and Diving

N.C. State: Senior Alexia Zevnik was honored for her excellence in the pool and classroom Thursday, as she was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team.

Miscellaneous

Shaw: Women’s volleyball and softball coach DiShondra Goree will participate in the U.S. Marine Corps Coaches Leadership Workshop in Quantico, Va., beginning Wednedsay. Goree is one of 30 coaches who will participate.
