UNC pep rally set for Sept. 16
Football season is here and it’s time to bring the Carolina gameday spirit to the heart of downtown Chapel Hill. Come out and rev up the season on Friday, Sept. 16, 6-9 p.m. on the Plaza at 140 West, prior to the season opener against James Madison.
Tar Heel Downtown is a pep rally atmosphere and fan experience on Franklin Street, featuring a live outdoor concert performed by Big Fat Gap, interactive games for kids and families, face painting and more. The UNC Marching Tar Heels, cheerleaders and Rameses will be in attendance.
UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham says, “Carolina football gamedays are an opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate all that makes this town and this university so special.”
Football
Elon: The university will have beer and wine sales stadium-wide for football games at BB&T Field and at the Joel Coliseum in 2016-17.
Women’s Basketball
St. Augustine’s: The Department of Athletics announced Thursday the promotion of Jarita Crump as full-time women’s basketball head coach.
Women’s Volleyball
Duke: Former All-American Emily Sklar has signed a professional contract with Vasas Óbuda in Budapest, Hungary. A member of the Middle European Volleyball Zonal Association, Vasas competes against teams in Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, Croatia and the Czech Republic.
Women’s Track and Field
Duke: Graduate Shannon Rowbury is set to represent the United States in her third consecutive Olympic Games Friday, as she takes the start line for the preliminary round of the women’s 1,500.
Women’s Soccer
N.C. State: The team will travel to Richmond for a Friday night exhibition. The contest marks the first match of the year for both teams and will kick off at 5 p.m. at River Road Field.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Duke: Former NCAA champion and 2012 Olympic silver medalist Abby Johnston opens action at the Olympic Games on Friday in the women’s individual 3-meter springboard preliminaries.
Miscellaneous
Elon: The American Sports Network announced Thursday that the Sept. 3 Elon football season opener against Gardner-Webb has been added to the CAA Football television package. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Elon’s Rhodes Stadium.
