Raleigh’s Paul Simson wins Senior North & South
Paul Simson has another Pinehurst trophy to savor.
Simson, from Raleigh, used a final-round 69 Thursday to win the Senior Men’s North & South Amateur for a fifth time, posting a 10-under 204 total at Pinehurst No. 5 to win by four shots.
Simson, 64, twice won the North & South Amateur. His seven overall titles at Pinehurst tied him with seven-time North & South Amateur champion George Dunlap, seven-time Women’s North & South Amateur champion Estelle Lawson Page and Carolyn Cudone, who won six Senior Women’s North & Souths and one Women’s North & South Amateur.
“It’s something of a legacy, I guess,” Simson said. “It’s always a thrill to win at Pinehurst.”
Don Reycroft of Norfolk, Mass., was second and Steve Hudson of Birmingham, Ala., was third after a final-round 67.
Judith Kyrinis, playing in her first Senior Women’s North & South, began the final round three shots behind Pat Brogden but rallied with a 2-over 72 on Pinehurst No. 1 to win by two shots.
