Simson sets Pinehurst record
Paul Simson continues to collect North & South Amateur titles, setting a Pinehurst record on Thursday.
Simson, from Raleigh, won his sixth North & South Senior Amateur title. Simson also won the prestigious North & South Men’s Amateur in 1995 and 1996, and his eight overall titles made him the winningest golfer in Pinehurst’s 120-year golf history.
“Who else in the world can say they have their name on the Pinehurst wall of honor more than anyone else?” Simson said Thursday. “It’s really cool to have done it just once. To have it more than anybody else is pretty special.”
Simson, 65, first won the North & South Senior Amateur in 2006, adding titles in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2015. He finished one shot ahead of Pinehurst resident Macon Moye on Thursday, notching birdies on two of the last three holes on the Pinehurst No. 5 course.
George Dunlap won the North & South Amateur seven times, Estelle Lawson Page claimed seven Women’s North & South Amateur titles and Carolyn Cudone won six Senior Women’s North & Souths and one Women’s North & South Amateur.
In this year’s Women’s North & South Senior Amateur, Canada’s Judith Kyrinis easily defended her title by firing a tournament-low 69 on Pinehurst No. 1 to win by 10 shots.
