Blocked field goal at the buzzer sends Fuquay-Varina past Millbrook football

The Fuquay-Varina and Millbrook football teams took a workman-like approach to a Labor Day game, toiling in the trenches all Monday night. The game wasn’t decided until a time expired on Millbrook’s missed field goal. That allowed Fuquay escaped with a 31-29 win on the Wildcats’ field.

Only 42 seconds earlier Fuquay-Varina (2-1) scored the game-winning touchdown on quarterback Brycen Braswell’s 1-yard dive. He set up the score with a 14-yard pass to Michael Roberson on second-and-13 from the 15-yard line.

The 11-play, 74-yard scoring drive followed the defense forcing a Millbrook punt.

Fuquay controlled the ball throughout the first half. The Bengals ran 30 plays (27 on the ground) for 154 total yards. Millbrook had half the plays and only 64 total yards.

But Fuquay was unable to capitalize on the advantage. Millbrook’s defensive stop in the first quarter forced Fuquay to settle for David Henson’s 26-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Fuquay drove 11 plays and 49 yards for a 10-0 lead on David Honeycutt’s 3-yard run.

Only three of Fuquay’s gains were five yards or more. The Bengals converted two third-down plays and one fourth-and-10 at the Millbrook 10.

TURNING POINT

On the second-play of Fuquay’s game-winning drive, Millbrook was flagged for a late hit on Braswell as he went out of bounds for a 5-yard gain. The additional 15 yards gave the Bengals a first down at the Millbrook 46-yard line.

THREE TO KNOW

Tyrus Townsend, Fuquay-Varina: The sophomore running back carried 10 times for 137 yards. He scored on a 48-yard run around right end to trim Millbrook’s lead to 29-24 with 6:13 to play.

David Henson, Fuquay-Varina: The senior’s 26-yard field goal to open the game’s scoring turned out to be the difference. He also was four-of-four on extra-point kicks. Fuquay drove from its 13-yard until the drive stalled at the 10.

Larry Rountree, Millbrook: The senior running back was the Wildcats’ workhorse and scored three touchdowns. He carried 26 times for 136 yards. He scored from 10, 24 and 5 yards.

THEY SAID IT

“Towards the end we really got it together as a team. Our right guard and right tackle stepped it up. We sealed the edge and got around them.” – Braswell.
