In review: Mallard Creek dominated 2013 title game with turnovers
Charlotte Mallard Creek quickly removed all the suspense from the state 4AA football championship a year ago as it rolled to a 59-21 victory over Wake Forest.
The Mustangs recovered two fumbles, intercepted a pass and blocked a punt in the first half as it buried Wake Forest 38-7 in the first two periods. Mallard Creek led 59-7 before the Cougars knocked in a pair of late touchdowns.
Mallard Creek quarterback James Smith, then a sophomore, threw three touchdown passes.
Wake Forest running back standout Bryce Love was injured and made only a token appearance, gaining five yards on four carries. The Cougars’ run-oriented Wing-T attack could do little against the Mustangs.
Mallard Creek finished 16-0. Wake Forest was 12-4.
