No. 9 Rocky Mount wins shootout with No. 21 J.H. Rose, 66-41

Rocky Mount broke open a close game at halftime with three touchdowns in the first five minutes of the second half en route to a 66-41 victory over J.H. Rose at Minges-Farley Athletic Complex on Friday.

A 29-yard field goal by Chase Miller on the last play of the first half broke a tie at 21 to put the Gryphons ahead.

On the third play of the second half, Rocky Mount’s Juane Daniels-Sanders broke loose for an 82-yard touchdown. After forcing a three-and-out, the Gryphons’ Detrell Revis scooped a punt that was rolling on the turf and returned it 55 yards for another score.

The Rampants then fumbled away the ensuing kickoff. Three plays later, DeAngelo Collins fell on a ball fumbled away by teammate Donomesion Brown.

In the last play of the first half and the first 4 minutes, 19 seconds of the second half, a tie at 21 had turned into a 45-21 rout for the Gryphons, the reigning NCHSAA 3A champions.

Rocky Mount (4-1) rolled up 473 yards rushing, led by 135 yards on 15 carries by DeAngelo Collins.

E.J. Harris finished with 271 yards and four touchdowns rushing on 32 carries for J.H. Rose (1-3).
