Area football roundup: Sanderson now 4-0, Fuquay-Varina wins a shootout with Athens Drive

No. 18 Bunn 54, Louisburg 7: Bunn scored a touchdown on each of its first eight possessions and added a Victor Dunston 62-yard punt return for a touchdown. Dunston later caught a 59-yard scoring strike from Quenten Wright to cap off his effective night. D.J. Jones rushed for 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Bunn (4-1), while Quamon Person (121 yards) and Tyre Davis (118 yards) combined for 239 yards on the ground for Louisburg (1-3).

C.B. Aycock 34, Corinth Holders 28: In a game featuring 62 points and 856 yards of total offense, it was a defensive play that ultimately made the difference.

Aycock’s Tim Farmer picked off an errant pass in the fourth quarter, and 15 plays later Aycock (4-1) had the eventual game-winning touchdown pass from Jake Flowers to Damien Darden from 13 yards out. The Golden Falcons (4-1) controlled the clock for most of the second half behind running back Caleb Gough’s 254 yards on a whopping 39 carries.

Franklinton 30, J.F. Webb 6: The Red Rams (3-2) didn’t allow a score until the fourth quarter en route to picking up the road decision in Oxford over the Warriors (1-4). Franklinton led 10-0. That score held up at halftime, but the Red Rams took charge in the second half with 20 unanswered points, including a 55-yard touchdown pass from Scott Scriver to Semaj McCowan.

No. 14 Fuquay-Varina 57, Athens Drive 43: Fuquay-Varina (4-1, 2-0 Southwest Wake 4A) outlasted big plays from Athens Drive (1-4, 1-1) thanks to a big day on the ground. The game even contained a 35-second stretch with three touchdowns – one score followed by back-to-back kickoff return touchdowns.

No. 23 Green Hope 35, Apex Friendship 6: Green Hope (3-2, 2-0 Southwest Wake 4A) scored off a blocked punt as Andrew Becvar returned it for a score to break open a close game. The Patriots (1-3, 0-2) scored on a four-yard run by Scott Sidney.

Harnett Central 27, Knightdale 0: Harnett Central picked up its first football victory of the season in dominating fashion in the Greater Neuse River 4A opener.

Mia’son Adams threw for 133 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Harnett Central (1-4, 1-0). Malikee McNeill found the end zone twice for the Trojans, once on a 38-yard strike from Adams and again on a blocked punt in the end zone. Quarterbacks D.J. Conner and Jalen Hodge combined to throw for 78 yards for the Knights (0-5, 0-1).

Kinston 48, Southern Wayne 12: Kinston broke open a two-point game with four touchdowns in the final 3:33 of the first half to roll.The Vikings led 8-6 following an 8-yard touchdown run by Kam’ryn Webster and a 62-yard run by Southern Wayne’s Deandre Wright.

Kinston (3-2) used a 9-yard touchdown run by Jacel Jacobs, a 36-yard interception return for a score by Bryon Harvey and touchdown passes by Webster to Daenard Branch and Jarquez Bizzell — the final two scores in the last 14.7 seconds of the first half — to take a commanding 35-6 lead at the half. Tahj Ramsey’s 46 yard touchdown run and Derico Williams' recovery of a Southern Wayne fumble in the end zone started the NCHSAA-mandated running clock, which took up the entire fourth quarter.

Southern Wayne (1-3) finished with 159 yards of offense, led by Wright’s 63 yards on nine carries; Saints quarterback Manny Walker completed six of 20 passes for 57 yards and the final touchdown of the game, a 15-yard strike to Derrick Armwood with 1:33 remaining in the game.

North Johnston 42, Smithfield-Selma 7: Trey Whitley accounted for five touchdowns and 138 yards of offense for the Panthers (4-1). Whitley scored on quarterback keepers of 3, 7, 16 and 38 yards. Smithfield-Selma (0-5) was led by Ziggy Durogene who ran for 84 yards while Tyquan Dublin totaled 62 yards on the ground and scored from one yard out for the Spartans’ lone score.

No. 7 Orange 37, Western Guilford 9: Payton Wilson had a 96-yard touchdown run while senior fullback Ryan Puckett added two touchdowns for the Panthers (5-0). Marvante Beasley added a 31-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The Hornets (1-4) got a late touchdown from Kalil Barrino. It was only the 2nd offensive touchdown Orange has yielded this year.

Person 32, Enloe 14: Enloe (2-2) struck early, but Person (4-1) scored the last 15 points of the game. Person quarterback Drew Clayton completed eight passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Fredrick Harris led the way on the ground with 21 carries for 137 yards. Hamilton Moore hit the century mark rushing for Enloe.

Rocky Mount Prep 54, Kestrel Heights 26: Led by senior running back Racquel Whitehead’s five-touchdown performance, the Jaguars (2-3) won without completing a pass. RMP compiled 478 rushing yards on 42 attempts and Whitehead finished with 220 yards on 20 carries. Kestrel Heights (0-4) junior wide receiver Brandon Sparrow caught 8 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

No. 13 Sanderson 55, Jordan 15: The Spartans (4-0) defeated the visiting Falcons (0-4) thanks to Jordan Logan’s 209 yards rushing on 16 carries for four touchdowns. The Sanderson defense has only allowed 21 points in the first four games of the season.

Union Pines 54, Western Harnett 0: The Eagles (1-4) dropped their third consecutive game and were shut out for the fourth time this season. Vikings senior Ben Bowbliss scored six touchdowns, ran for 231 yards and added 156 passing to lead Union Pines (4-1). Javontay Gaddy nearly scored for Western late in the first quarter, but was stopped at the 1-yard line and the Eagles missed a field goal.

Dave Malenick

No. 16 Wakefield 32, No. 24 Riverside 0: The Wolverines (3-1) allowed a 46-yard kickoff return to D’Anthony Bright and a 43-yard scamper from tailback Kaligah Murrell to open the game, but stuffed the Pirates (2-3) from there to get their first shutout.

Leading the Wakefield offense was quarterback Matthew McKay, who completed 10 of 20 passes for 130 yards and four touchdowns. Receivers Rico Jenkins, Najeem Wilson and Nathan Jester all caught touchdowns, while running back Chad Norfleet had the other score, rushing for 71 yards on 15 carries. Murrell had 117 yards on 24 carries for Riverside.

No. 11 West Johnston 48, Rolesville 20: West Johnston scored on its first play from scrimmage – a 57-yard pass from Andre Wilson to Timare Robinson – and never looked back in the conference opener for both. Wilson finished with three touchdown passes and one rushing for West Johnston (4-0, 1-0 Greater Neuse River 4A). Rolesville (1-4, 0-1) scored on three touchdown passes from quarterback Camarji Andrews.
