Athens Drive scores 82 points, routs Cary football
Athens Drive posted a school record 82 points to celebrate its homecoming with an 82-34 demolition of Cary.
Orlando Flowers, Brandon Ray and Robert Ruffin led the Jaguars (3-5, 3-2 Southwest Wake 4A) with three touchdowns apiece. Ruffin scored the first points on a short run, while Flowers scored on runs of 68, 56 and 21 yards.
Athens led 48-21 at intermission and then Ray opened the second half with an 85-yard kickoff return for a score.
Isaiah Henderson, Xzavier McNeil, Sam Enders and Xavier Vinson also scored for the Jaguars. Vinson’s 31-yard dash midway through the fourth quarter proved to be the record breaker.
Cary’s Keeyon Hicks scored three times for the Imps, who fell to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
TURNING POINT
Geovony Cannon intercepted a Cary pass early in the game. It led to a nine-play Jaguar drive capped off by a Ruffin 6-yard touchdown run. Cannon added his second pick on Cary’s next possession and Athens never looked back.
THREE TO KNOW
Orlando Flowers, Athens Drive: His final score of the game came early in the third period and put Athens ahead 62-27. He left the game at that point with 205 yards.
Gabe Brew and Khalil Khatib, Athens Drive: Combined for 4 sacks and hounded Imp ball carriers all night.
Cristopher Washington, Cary: Managed to rush for 115 yards to lead Cary on the ground.
