Southern Durham football routs J.F. Webb in Warriors’ last Big 8 game

In his final regular season game at Spartans Stadium, Southern Durham quarterback Jalen Greene threw for 278 yards and six touchdowns as the Spartans defeated J.F. Webb 67-28 on senior night.

Southern (7-4, 5-1) scored touchdowns on nine of its first 10 possessions in winning its fifth straight contest. Greene accounted for 278 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in the first half. He opened the game with a 43-yard run, then hurled a 20-yard touchdown pass to Destin Maxwell to put Southern ahead 7-0 just 29 seconds into the game. On the final play of the first half, Green found Maxwell, who fought his way into the end zone for a touchdown as the clock expired.

Backup Spartans quarterback Jaquez Harrell alternated with Green behind center and finished 8-of-14 for 123 yards and two touchdowns.

Webb (2-9, 1-5), in its final football game in the Big 8 3A Conference, received 98 yards rushing and a touchdown from junior running back Rahzel Wade. Quarterback Tre Harris ran for a nine-yard touchdown and threw a 18-yard touchdown pass to senior Joe McCalister.

“Our kids expectations were so high. Then we lost to Cardinal Gibbons (leading to a 1-3 start). It took them three games to get over that loss. I told them not to let that game cost us three or four games, but it pretty much did. So we met, made mental adjustments, and now we’re getting what we’re getting.” – Southern coach Darius Robinson.

OUT OF BOUNDS

It was the final regular season home game for 28 Southern seniors, including Greene, top receiver Santonio Marshall, and leading rusher Joey Strong Jr.
