Union Pines football coach Ryan Riggan has resigned to accept a job in administration at Sandhills Community College. He built the Vikings into a perennial playoff team at the end of his eight seasons.

Union Pines went 6-6 for its third straight year this fall. The 18 wins over the last three seasons is the most for the Vikings since 1996-98 seasons. Riggan leaves with a 32-59 overall record, but building the program took time.

“In 2010, my second year here, we dressed out just under 30 guys for a varsity football team at a school with 1,300 students and now we dress 50-65 kids on Friday and over 60 on Thursday for JV games,” Riggan said.

There are now 12 area openings: Wakefield, Green Hope, East Wake, Riverside, Harnett Central, Orange, Union Pines, Western Harnett, Beddingfield, Bunn, Northern Vance and Southern Vance.
