Leesville Road, Broughton girls soccer tie

Leesville Road junior Izzy White drilled in a goal from about 20 yards out with just over five minutes to play in regulation Thursday night to tie the score with Cap Eight conference leader Broughton. Then the two teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods for a 1-1 tie.

The Caps (10-1-1, 7-1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute of regulation when junior Julia Stevens knocked in a well-placed shot of her own.

“That was a really strong game by both sides,” Broughton coach Kelly Mastin said. “Both teams played with a lot of heart, and the fight on both sides was equal. We beat Leesville 2-0 the first time around; they really came to play today.

“Julia's shot was gorgeous,” Mastin said. “She beat two people before she hit it in. She's a fast player, has super feet and has a lot of assists for us.?”

It looked like the first score would hold up for most of the second half, even though Leesville did have more scoring opportunities in the game.

“We're a young team and at times have been raggedy,” Leesville coach Paul Dinkenor said. “But today we had several girls play their best games. We were creative. We had three or four good scoring chances, and I was disappointed we couldn't put it in there. It was Izzy's first goal of the season, and that was her best game of the season.”

Leading up to White's score, she kicked a corner kick that was blocked away from the goal, but she was there to follow with the tying shot.

Both coaches saluted the play of their goal keepers, Allie Cutler of Broughton and Shannon Hardy of Leesville.

“We played very well and we like playing teams who play soccer and Broughton plays soccer,” said Dinkenor, whose team is now 6-4-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the league.
