Southeast Raleigh has had quite a dynasty in Greater Neuse River 4A track and field.

And that continued on Thursday, but while the girls’ team won in a blowout the boys needed about every point they got.

Jason Putnam won the 3200 and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x800 relay while Dominic Foy took the 300 hurdles as the Bulldogs squeaked by host Garner 135-131 to win the conference boys’ title for the fifth straight season.

The Southeast girls – led by MVP Kylia Wright with wins in the 100 and 200 and a leg on the winning 4x100 relay – had no trouble, rolling up 238 points to 134 for second-place Garner for their 10th straight championship.

“We thought the girls would be really strong, but we knew the boys would be close,” Southeast coach Liz Gary said. “I look at times and distances the day before for kind of a virtual meet, and we knew it would be close on the boys’ side.

“We had some people perform a lot better than we expected, and some people from other teams we expected to be here didn’t compete.”

East Wake finished third in the boys’ event with 97 points, followed by West Johnston with 84, Clayton 76, Knightdale 741/2, Rolesville 48 and Harnett Central 39.

Clayton sprinter Rodney Rowe was named the MVP of the boys’ meet with wins in the 100 and 200.

Knightdale scored 981/2 to finish third in the girls’ meet, followed by Clayton with 86, West Johnston 28, Rolesville 251/2, East Wake 24 and Harnett Central 17.

In boys’ action the Bulldogs got victories from Foy in the 300 hurdles (40.98), Putnam in the 3200 (10:00.36), and the 4x800 relay of Terrance Adams, Brian Ananaba, Khalil Gary and Putnam (8:32.4.) Southeast’s Jordan Maddox also won the wheelchair, shot, discus, 100 and 200 uncontested.

Garner got individual wins from Matt Butler in the shot (48-43/4) and Davon Newton in the high jump (6-2) while the its 4x200 relay of Mason Crawford, Donovan Evans, Juwan Manley and Breon Cook won in 1:32.32.

“We had some outstanding performances today,” Garner boys’ coach Gary George said. “We competed hard and the guys gave it their all. It was a great day for us, really. We won the 4x200 with three freshmen and Breon the only senior. I was very proud of that.”

Rowe won the boys’ 100 in 10.773 and the 200 in 21.965.

East Wake dominated the boys’ field events, as Charleston High won the long jump (19-113/4) and triple jump (43-1) while Damontay Rhem took the discus (151-8).
