The West swept both N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star basketball games at the Greensboro Coliseum on Monday.
The girls game was almost never in doubt as the West won 95-81.
But the boys game went down to the wire, with Lincoln Charter’s Kody Shubert hitting the game-winning runner with less than four seconds left to pull off the 106-104 victory.
Kenny Dye (of Jacksonville’s Northside High) had just hit a contested floater with less than nine seconds left to tie the game at 104-all before Shubert went coast-to-coast. The East could not get a last-second shot off.
Girls Basketball: The West was in control early and led 45-39 at halftime.
The MVP award went to Eastern Guilford’s Jazmin Harris, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Ardrey Kell point guard Journey Muhammad had an excellent night as well, scoring 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting (6-of-8 from 3). Mount Airy’s Jo Snow added 14 points and (Harrisburg) Hickory Ridge’s Rinnah Green had 11 for the victors.
For the East, Azariah Fields (New Hanover) led the charge with 20 points on 8-of-8 shooting (4-of-4 from 3). Elana Ingram of Roxboro Community had 11 points and Southeast Raleigh’s Jada McMillian and South Lenoir’s Hunter West each had 10.
Boys Basketball: The West trailed 58-48 at halftime, but Shubert led the late charge, scoring 10 of his team’s final 11 points, and finishing with 14.
Eastern Guilford’s Jaylen Alston had 20, Hunter Tyson of Unionville’s Piedmont High had 19, Torey James of Hickory had 17 and Andy Pack of Northern Guilford added 12.
For the East, Clinton’s Dewan Lesesne had 25 (on 12 of 15 shooting from the floor), followed by Dye and Green Hope’s Ryan Shaffer (15 each), Garner’s Kenyon Burt (14) and Gabe Kirkendoll (11) of Northside High in Jacksonville.
