We have a winner. The first N&O athlete of the week is here

Trinity Academy volleyball player Emmy Owen is the first News & Observer high school athlete of the week.

Each Sunday, the newspaper will release a list of nominees, derived from coaches’ submissions, and readers will get to vote.

In Week 1, Owen captured more than 35 percent of the 7,615 votes cast. Cary Christian runner Brock Vanek was second and Grace Christian runner Lily Lauffer was third.

Owen got off to strong start with 14 aces, 10 kills and five digs in wins over Burlington Christian (Sept. 18) and St. David’s (Sept. 14).
