Who are the top 10 girls HS basketball players in NC? Meet the 2020-21 ‘Super Team’
Saniya Rivers, from Ashley High School in Wilmington, is the N.C. girls basketball player of the year, and she headlines the first Charlotte Observer/News & Observer Super Team.
The Super Team recognizes the top 10 players in the state.
Rivers is a a 6-1 McDonald’s All-American who averaged 37 points, 11.5 rebounds and led her team to the N.C. 4A semifinals. She’ll play at South Carolina next season.
The N.C. girls coach of the year is Vance High’s Donnell Rhyne, who led his team to an undefeated season and a second straight N.C. 4A state championship.
First team
Saniya Rivers, Ashley, 6-1, Sr, G: Ranked No. 3 nationally by ESPN, signed to South Carolina, averaged 37 points, 11.5 rebounds, 5.3 steals, 5.1 assists and 1.4 blocks.
Reigan Richardson, Cannon, 6-0, Sr., G: McDonald’s All-American averaged 27 points, 10.4 rebounds for the N.C. Independent Schools 4A state champions.
Jessica Timmons, Independence, 5-9, Sr., G: N.C. State recruit broke a 28-year-old Mecklenburg County public school career scoring record in February. Averaged 29 ppg.
Indya Nivar, Apex Friendship, 5-11, Jr, G: Averaged 24 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals; District 5 player of the year.
Jerni Kiaku, Garner, 5-7, Jr., G: Holds school-career scoring record (1,559); averaged 25.4 points, 4.6 assists, 3.4 steals and 2.7 rebounds. Named SWAC player of the year.
