Two of the top teams in the News & Observer’s Sweet 16 met on the hardwood Thursday, and the teams are quite familiar with one another.

That led to an intense, grinding, defensive game between a pair of teams looking to control their own destiny in conference play.

Jordan held one-basket leads at the end of each the first, second and third quarters, and the team traded high-pressure free throws in the closing seconds, with Hillside coming up with the tying points to force the extra session.

Jordan, unbeaten in conference play at 7-0, took out its main competitor for the title in Hillside, which suffered just its third loss of the season.

No rest for the weary, either. The same two teams will suit up again for a rematch on Monday, Jan. 31.
