Rising Green Hope senior Bryce Dixon committed to N.C. State on Friday.

Dixon, a 6-foot-3, 224-pound receiver, projects as an H-back for the Wolfpack and could line up in the backfield, on the line or in the slot. He’s ranked the 32nd-best senior in the state by Rivals.com.

He said he made the decision because N.C. State had his desired major – sport management – and will use him in a variety of ways.

“They had the major that I wanted and it was close enough where my family and my extended family could watch me too,” Dixon said. “I feel like they can put me in the best position to pursue a future after football.”

Dixon is the son of Green Hope coach Kwame Dixon. The Falcons went 10-3 last year and won the Southwest Wake Athletic Conference championship. He had 62 catches for 879 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior.

NCHSAA State Cup: Carrboro cruised while Cardinal Gibbons won a close race in the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s Wells Fargo state cup competition, which gives points based on postseason finish across all sports. Apex and Green Hope shared the 4A crown.

Green Hope has now won six straight cup titles, while Gibbons has won nine of the last 10 and Carrboro has won four in a row. In 1A, Raleigh Charter was third.

N.C. Science and Math, South Granville, Chapel Hill, Lee County, Union Pines, Broughton, Millbrook, Panther Creek, Cary, Leesville Road and Southeast Raleigh all nabbed top-15 finishes in their respective classifications.

NCHSAA Conference Cup: The NCHSAA also awards conference cups, which is given to teams with the best overall conference finishes across all sports. Each conference determines its own points system.

Green Hope, Clayton, East Chapel Hill, Millbrook, Cardinal Gibbons, Corinth Holders and Union Pines were the greater Triangle area’s 4A and 3A champs. Carrboro, South Granville, Princeton, Louisburg and Franklin Academy also won.

NCISAA State Cup: St. David’s won the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Wells Fargo state cup in 2A for this past year. The Warriors won state titles in boys soccer and girls tennis. In 3A, Ravenscroft was third and Cary Academy fourth.

Powerade State Games: Teams of the Triangle’s best rising juniors, seniors and sophomores performed well at the Powerade State Games last week. Teams with players from Wake, Johnston, Durham, Orange, Chatham and Franklin, among others, finished third in baseball, second in softball, first in boys’ soccer and third in girls’ soccer.

The boys and girls’ lacrosse championships were postponed due to weather and may be made up this week.

The boys and girls basketball championships were in a different format, featuring schools instead of all-star teams from various regions. Millbrook’s girls beat Panther Creek for the title while Millbrook’s boys made it a sweep against Southern Durham.

Clash of the Carolinas: North Carolina’s boys won the Clash of the Carolinas all-star soccer game for the fifth consecutive year on Saturday, taking a 7-0 victory against South Carolina. The N.C. girls team tied 0-0 to remain unbeaten over the last seven years.

Panther Creek’s Celeste Barnard, who made eight saves was co-MVP along with South Carolina goalkeeper Sara Dooley. She was joined by six area players: Panther Creek’s Justine James and Rachael Everhart, Millbrook’s Alexa Asher, Corinth Holders’ Bella Iorio, Broughton’s Allie Cutler and Wakefield’s Kat McDonald. Cardinal Gibbons’ Michele Miller helped coach the team.

Holly Springs’ Aaron Latigue had three assists for the boys’ team. He was joined by Raleigh Charter’s Zane Kerr, Heritage’s Hunter Weiland, Broughton’s Jack Krueger, Cardinal Gibbons’ Cooper Duplantis and Chapel Hill’s Duncan Davis.

Youth match-play golf: Recent Green Hope grad Meghan Symonds and recent Fuquay-Varina grad Catherine Ashworth each did well in the N.C. Junior Girls Match-Play Championships. Symonds won the Tournament Flight division while Ashworth was second in the Championship Flight.

Green Hope rising sophomore Jack Massei won the N.C. Junior Boys Match-Play championship.

New Athens hoops coach: Athens Drive will have just its third boys basketball coach since the school opened in 1978. Robbie St. John was hired last month, replacing Robert Clemons

NCHSAA hall of famer Lawrence Dunn was the school’s first coach and served until 2001, when Robert Clemons took over.

Clemons – who won a state championship with High Point’s T.W. Andrews in 1995 – and the Jaguars last reached the playoffs in 2012.

All-state softball: The N.C. Softball Coaches Association’s massive all-state list was posted over the weekend. More than 400 players received honors.

The top honors went to Orange’s Mia Davidson (3A East player of the year), South Granville’s Miranda Barker (2A East pitcher of the year), South Granville’s Erin Boone (2A East player of the year) and Lee County’s Whitney Sanford (3A East pitcher of the year).
