Panther Creek’s Amari Odom, Millbrook’s Reychel Douglas are N&O athletes of the week
The News & Observer boys and girls athletes of the week are Panther Creek’s Amari Odom and Millbrook’s Reychel Douglas.
▪ Odom, a 6-foot-3 junior scored 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead Panther Creek to a 66-56 win over Cardinal Gibbons in the first round of the 4A state playoffs Feb. 22.
He scored 10 points, had three rebounds and one assists in a 61-56 win at New Hanover in the second round Feb. 24.
Odom also led the No. 15-seed, Catamounts to a 73-69, third round win at Apex Friendship, scoring 15 points to go with four rebounds and four assists, Feb. 26.
Odom is averaging 11.3 points, 5.1 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game for Panther Creek, which will play Weddington High from Union County in Saturday’s N.C. 4A state final.
▪ Douglas, who also won last week, is a 6-foot junior who scored 32 points, had 16 rebounds, four assists and five steals in a 65-50 first round 4A state playoff victory over Middle Creek Feb. 22.
She followed that up with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 55-41 second victory over Athens Drive Feb. 24.
Douglas also scored 21 points, had eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 67-65 third round win over Garner Feb. 26.
Douglas averaged 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals per game for a Millbrook this season.
