Sumner cruises to Twin States title
Kathleen Sumner allowed herself a bit of nerves just once last week during the Carolina Golf Association’s 49th Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship. That was when she was standing over her last putt.
Gracyn Burgess of Lexington, S.C., was standing nearby, having just putted out for a 144 total.
“The last putt was a little scary, because I knew I had to have it to win. ... I was just thinking I really do not want to go into a playoff. But I just hit it and that was it,” said Sumner, who sank the 10-footer to birdie the 18th to beat Burgess by one stroke Wednesday and to claim her first CGA title. “It felt awesome.”
Having carded the tournament’s low round of 69 Tuesday at Chapel Hill Country Club, Sumner entered Wednesday’s round with a two-shot lead over Burgess and Ashley Czarnecki of Greenville, S.C. But that evaporated after a double bogey on the front nine.
Sumner, a rising junior at Charleston’s Bishop England high school, didn’t panic. She had played so-so on the front nine Tuesday, then played the back in 3-under-par. Wednesday, she birdied 10, 14 and 18.
“I didn’t start off hitting the ball as well; things were a little tricky for a while, but I was able to get back on track,” Sumner said.
The championship was flighted after the first round. Riley Smyth of Cary shot a career-low 69 in the second round to finish first in the 1st Flight. Kathyrn Carson of Mooresville finished second with a total score of 151. South Carolinians Smith Knaffle and Hailey Cleary tied Hailey Freedman of Chapel Hill at 156 total for third in the flight.
In Flight 2, Annie Collom of Charlotte, N.C. took home first place honors with Anna Chanthaphaeng of Boiling Springs, S.C. taking solo second. Tied for third was Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. and Jensen Castle of West Columbia, S.C.
Meghan Symonds of Cary, N.C. finished one shot ahead of Catherine Ashworth of Fuquay-Variana to win Flight 3. Samantha Bennett of Wake Forest placed third in the flight.
Flight 4 saw Muskan Uppal fire a second round 76 to take home the first place trophy. Beth Ann Townsend of Greenville, S.C. finished second in the flight beating Carrie Ganim of Greensboro, N.C. by a single stroke.
Brooke Hutto of Aiken, S.C. finished first in the 5th Flight. Ashley Kim of Chapel Hill took home second while Bryson Bowman of Summerfield and Anna Moore of Wilmington, N.C. finished tied for third.
