Vote for the News & Observer’s girls high school athlete of the week (05.01.22)

Here are this week’s nominees for the News & Observer’s high school girls athlete of the week. Vote now, and vote often by clicking on tour choice below. You may refresh and vote as many times as you’d like.

Lindsey Drew, Millbrook Softball: The Wildcats’ junior went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four stolen bases to help Millbrook to a 21-1 win at Knightdale, April 19.

The next day, she went 2-for-4 with a home run, RBI, two runs and a stolen base in a 12-4 loss to Wakefield.

Drew also went 3-for-3 with two home runs, five RBI, four runs and two stolen bases in a 17-4 victory over Knightdale, April 21.

Millbrook is 6-8 overall this season.

Kalyn Kyle, Clayton Softball: The Comets’ senior went five innings on the mound with 11 strikeouts, while going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI in a 13-2 win over Cleveland, April 19.

Kyle, a Gardner-Webb University signee, also went five innings with 14 strikeouts in a complete game, shutout, while going 1-for-2 at the plate with three more RBI in a 12-0 win over Corinth Holders, April 20.

Clayton (12-4) also beat Southeast Raleigh 16-1, April 21.

Ashley McFarlane, Wakefield Soccer: The Wolverines’ scored four goals, while leading a Wakefield defense that allowed only two games in three contests this week.

McFarlane had a goal in a 2-1 win over Heritage, April 18. She also had a goal in a 9-0 shutout of Knightdale on April 20, and two goals in a 3-1 win at Rolesville, April 21.

McFarlane has six goals and four assists for Wakefield (12-3) this season.

Kayly Pastrana, West Johnston Soccer: The Wildcats’ junior midfielder scored a goal in a 9-0 win at South Johnston on April 19, and had two goals and two assists in a 9-0 victory over South Johnston on April 22.

Pastrana has 14 goals and nine assists for West Johnston (9-4) this season.

Toria Roundtree, Green Hope Track: The Falcons’ senior won the shot put with 37-7 at the Wake County Championships at Willow Spring High on April 23. Roundtree also won the discus with a 110-1 at the same event.

The Green Hope girls’ track team finished ninth of the 23 teams that competed at the Wake County Championships.

Faith Spencer, Panther Creek Track: The Catamounts’ senior won the high jump (5-2), long jump (17-1) and the triple jump (38-5) at the Wake County Championships at Willow Spring High, April 23.

Spencer’s efforts helped the Panther Creek girls’ track team to win the Wake County title the same day.

Ashbee Standridge, Falls Lake Academy Softball: The Firebirds’ junior had a monster week with five home runs, 12 RBI and 10 runs scored as Falls Lake Academy beat Cedar Ridge, East Wake Academy and Voyager Academy.

Standridge went 3-for-3 with two home runs, six RBI and four runs scored in a 16-6 win over East Wake Academy on April 19. The next day, she was 3-for-4 at the plate with three home runs, three RBI and three runs scored in a 12-8 victory over Cedar Ridge.

Standridge then went 3-for-4 with a triple, two doubles, three RBI and three more runs scored in a 13-1 win at Voyager Academy on April 22.

Standridge is batting .489 with nine home runs, 22 RBI and six doubles for Falls Lake Academy (9-5-1) this season.

Emily Stuckey, Smithfield Selma Soccer: The Spartans’ junior scored four goals and had one assist in a 7-5 win at East Wake High on April 19.

She then accounted for all nine goals, with four goals and five assists, in a 9-0 victory at South Johnston on April 21, and finished off the week with four more goals and an assist in an 8-4 win over East Wake High, April 22.

Stuckey has 27 goals and 14 assists for Smithfield Selma (7-9) this season.
