High school football is coming to Bank of America Stadium in August. Here’s what we know
High school football is finally coming to Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers.
The first “Keep Pounding” High School Classic will be played Aug. 19 at Bank of America Stadium and will be a battle of North and South Carolina high school powers.
N.C. private schools state champion Providence Day will play Rock Hill’s Northwestern High. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
Northwestern finished 14-2 last season and reached the S.C. 4A state championship game.
The Panthers have sponsored high school football games at Memorial Stadium, near uptown Charlotte, with staff and current and former players, and the team has participated in games on high school campuses.
The Panthers also hosted the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s state championship press conference in December. And in 2020, the NFL team had scheduled for Myers Park to play Rock Hill’s South Pointe High School at its field, but that game was canceled due to the COVID pandemic.
Now, that historic first high school game there seems ready to happen.
“It’s awesome it’s really cool,” Providence Day coach Chad Grier said. “I don’t want to overstate this, but I feel really blessed for everything that’s happening here at Providence Day. It’s almost surreal how many great things are happening in our program and in our school and this is just another tremendous opportunity for our kids. Northwestern is a traditional power in our area, our region, and to play those guys in a venue like Bank of America Stadium is just a tremendous honor.”
Grier’s team features quarterback Jadyn Davis, who will be a senior next fall, and offensive lineman David Sanders, along with a bevy of high major Division I recruits. Davis, named Mr. NC Football last season, is the No. 15 overall prospect in the nation in his class according to 247 Sports. He’s the No. 2 prospect nationally at quarterback. Sanders, who will be a junior next fall, is the No. 1 overall recruit nationally in his class. Both players are five-star recruits.
The Panthers will host a news conference Monday with Grier, Northwestern head coach Page Wofford and Panthers head coach Frank Reich. Tickets for the game will go on sale this summer for $5.
“Supporting youth and high school football is a pillar of the Carolina Panthers community endeavors,” said Riley Fields, director of community relations for the NFL team. “High school football plays an important role in our communities across the Carolinas, and we’re thrilled to elevate our support by bringing the first-ever high school football game to Bank of America Stadium with a powerhouse match up between the Northwestern Trojans and Providence Day Chargers.”
