Former UNC star Ed Cota says his son, now playing in Charlotte, could be better than him

Olympic High’s boys’ basketball team won its sixth straight game on Tuesday night.

And a big contributor to the Trojans’ fast start, which included Tuesday’s 74-47 win against visiting A.L. Brown, has a name familiar to ACC basketball fans.

Freshman guard Eddie Cota had four points and six assists in Olympic’s victory. He’s the son of former Tar Heels point guard Ed Cota.

“He instilled a love for the game and I’ve been around basketball my whole life,” Eddie Cota said of his father’s influence. “It’s been a natural thing for me to play this sport.”

Ed Cota, who played at UNC from 1996-2000, remains the Tar Heels’ all-time assist leader (1,030) and was the point guard for three Final Four teams while playing aside legendary UNC players like Providence’s Antawn Jamison, Gastonia Hunter Huss’ Kris Lang and Greensboro Dudley’s Brendan Haywood, Vince Carter and Jason Capel.

Eddie Cota has heard about his father’s success and knows his father played in a star-studded 1996 McDonald’s All-Star Game that included Kobe Bryant.

“I hear a lot,” Eddie Cota said. “I know he was a great player. ... He’s UNC’s all-time assist leader so I’m just trying to carry on that legacy.”

Ed Cota thinks his son is developing at a faster pace than he did when he grew up on New York playgrounds and at Brooklyn’s Tilden High School and St. Thomas More High School in Connecticut.

“I don’t want to put a bar on it,” Ed Cota said of how talented his son can be. “I definitely think he’s going to be better than his dad. I’ll say that. And his dad was pretty good.

“He’s a lot more skilled that I was at this age. He’s still young and has a lot of growth left to do.”

Olympic coach Jeffrey Bishop says the return of senior guard J.D. Terrell and the addition of Eddie Cota has given his team two talented facilitators for his up-tempo offense. Terrell played at Olympic as a freshman and sophomore, then transferred to Chambers last season before returning to Olympic this year.

“With J.D. coming back and Cota coming in, it’s given us experience and pedigree,” said Bishop, whose team has already improved on last year’s 5-20 record.

Bishop says he sees a lot of Ed Cota’s play in Eddie Cota.

“Their both fiery kind of guys,” Bishop said. “And like his father, Eddie has a great basketball IQ.”

In Tuesday’s victory, senior sharpshooter Randy Johnson (17 points, five 3-pointers), Jaden Hartnett (14 points) and Maurice Sabb (11 points) led Olympic to the victory.

After leading 20-18 at the end of the first quarter, Eddie Cota had five assists in the second quarter when Olympic outscored the visiting Wonders 24-4 to take a 44-22 halftime lead.
