Last year, Wakefield qualified golfers for the N.C. High School Athletic Association state championship in Pinehurst.

This year, the reigning Cap-8 champion looks to go as a team.

As if the conference opponents weren’t challenging enough, Wakefield coach Carolyn Reitz said other Triangle leagues will also be tough.

“They got some good teams in other conferences, so we’ve got our work cut out for us,” Reitz said of her team, which will return senior Casey Burroughs and feature incoming freshman Ryanne Howard. “We’ve got girls working hard that are coming back.”

Burroughs finished among the Top 20 in the state last year (76-82--158). In the Cap-8, she finished individually behind Hertiage’s Rhea Bhatia and Wake Forest’s Samantha Bennett.

Wakefield topped Heritage, 53-44.5, for the conference title last season, dropping just one league match on the way.

Wakefield will return three seniors in Burroughs, Jaclyn Henshaw and Shreeya Singh.

“Jaclyn, I’m looking for her to show real improvement on her scoring,” Reitz said. “She turned it on at the end (of last season). Her average … was barely off. She missed it by two strokes. I anticipate all five of these girls will qualify for regionals.”

Some Cap-8 individuals to watch this season include Bennett, Wake Forest’s only returner, Burroughs and Mogie Adamchick of Leesville Road.

Cap-8 golf opens on Aug. 24 at Hedingham Golf Club in Raleigh.
