Charlotte school earns title on Day 3 of the John Wall Holiday Invitational
And on Monday, there was hardware to be won.
South Mecklenburg’s girls’ basketball team took down a trophy Monday afternoon in emphatic fashion. Behind a balanced attack that saw eight players record at least one basket, South Meck of Charlotte pulled away from Southeast Raleigh for a 52-37 win to capture the championship in the Frances Pulley bracket of the John Wall Holiday Invitational in Raleigh.
The Sabres reached Monday’s title game with a convincing win over Broughton High School of Raleigh, and kept right on rolling through the final game. Kaitlyn Hensley was a catalyst for South Meck in the final game, scoring 13 points, including 4-of-8 from the 3-point line.
KB Brown added 11 points for the Sabres, and Nykira Arrington was a beast on the boards, hauling in 10 rebounds to lead all players.
Amaya Rhodes led Southeast Raleigh with 11 points, and Madalyn Pass added 10 in the loss.
Petersburg 60, Garner 50
Petersburg’s two-pronged attack of Latrell Allmond and Ladarius Givan combined for 45 points to power the Crimson Wave to a 60-50 win over Garner in the seventh-place game of the Day’Ron Sharpe bracket at the John Wall Holiday Invitational.
Givan posted an impressive double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Allmond led all players with 25 points.
Kingston Beale led Garner with 14 points, and Darius Whitner chipped in 10 for Garner.
Southern Durham 68, Broughton 63
He may only be a sophomore, but Southern Durham’s AJ Morman already has some NCAA offers in hand. If he continues playing like he did this week at the John Wall Holiday Invitational, many more are likely to come.
Morman dropped 41 points and grabbed six defensive rebounds Monday to pace the Spartans to a 68-63 win over top junior Jordan Page and host Broughton in the fifth-place game of the Day’Ron Sharpe bracket. Morman was 13-for-18 from the field, including 3-for-5 from the arc, and 12-of-14 from the line.
KJ Terry chipped in nine points and Dwayne Henrique added seven for Southern Durham.
Page, the top-tanked junior in North Carolina, led Broughton with 21 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Austin Youngs continued his strong play for the Capitals with 17 points in the loss.
Davidson Day 69, Burlington School 57
Sophomore Xavier Hall, who confirmed Monday he’s picked up a recruiting over from N.C. State, let his play do the talking on the court, pouring in 20 points and hauling in seven rebounds to lead Davidson Day past The Burlington School, 69-57.
Hall, who had 14 points in his team’s opening loss to Southeastern Prep, was named player of the game. Sherod McCormick III added 16 points for Davidson Day, and Clemson-bound Will Stevens chipped in 12.
Julian Lowe led The Burlington School with 18 points and five boards.
Davidson Day will play in the fifth-place game of the Coby White Bracket on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. against Ambassador Christian.
Ambassador Christian 84, Millbrook 49
Still stinging from a Game 1 loss to Spire Academy, Ambassador Christian took out its frustration on Millbrook of Raleigh on Monday.
Jeremiah Jones-Franklin led a balanced attack with 22 points, six rebounds and four assists as the Lions rolled to an 84-49 win over the Wildcats. Nick Haney added 13 points, Judah King had 11 and Braden Miller added 10 with 10 boards.
Josh Conti led Millbrook with 22 points in the loss.
Ambassador Christian of Huntersville will face Davidson Day of Charlotte in the fifth-place game of the Coby White bracket at the John Wall Holiday Invitational on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.
Coronado 72, Wilson 60
Devaughn Dorrough led all players with 23 points and he added nine rebounds to lead Coronado High School of Nevada past Wilson High School of Florence, South Carolina, 72-60, on Day 3 of the John Wall Holiday Invitational.
The win advances Coronado to the championship game of the Day’Ron Sharpe bracket of the tournament, where it will meet Greenfield School of Wilson.
Amare Oba added 16 points for Coronado, and Munir Greig chipped in 11 in the winning effort.
Josh Leonard paced Wilson with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Isaiah Addison checked in with 12 and KJ Allen added 11 in the loss.
Spire 62, Greensboro Day 43
After a lackluster start, Spire Academy righted the ship in the second quarter Monday on its way to a 62-43 win over Greensboro Day on Day 3 of the John Wall Holiday Invitational.
Tarris Bouie, a Charlotte native and Alabama commit, led the way for Spire, posting 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Dorian Rinaldo-Komlan added 15 points and nine rebounds and Darrell Davis chipped in 10 points in the win. Spire will now face CJ Rosser and Southeastern Prep in the Coby White bracket championship at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Micah Gunter had 12 points and Grant Duggins 11 for Greensboro Day in the loss. Greensboro Day will face IMG Academy in the third-place game at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Southeastern Prep 75, IMG 56
Southeastern Prep had four players in double figures and overwhelmed IMG, 75-56, in the nightcap Monday at the John Wall Holiday Invitational.
Obinna Ekezie was 8-for-10 from the field and led all players with 18 points, while Beckham Black added 15 to help their team into the final of the Coby White bracket. Anthony Cruz added 12 and Rocky Mount native CJ Rosser had 11 for Southeastern Prep, which controlled the game from the second quarter on. All 11 players for Southeastern Prep saw the floor.
Chase Foster led IMG with 13 points and Ralph Scott added 10 in the loss.
