Berry’s boys win three events in Thursday’s indoor track and field finals

Berry Academy’s boys won three events Thursday and finished fifth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s Class 6A indoor track and field championships in Winston-Salem.

The Asheboro boys and Watauga girls captured team championships in the 6A meet.

Later Thursday, the Eastern Wayne boys and Cummings girls won team titles in the Class 4A indoor championships at the JDL Fast Track.

The 7A and 5A meets are set for Friday, with the 8A meet scheduled for Saturday morning.

The 1A/2A and 3A meets were held Wednesday.

Berry Academy junior Vincent Womack took the 55-meter hurdles, edging out runner-up Alex Reiter of East Chapel Hill.

The Cardinals’ other individual champion was Nana Mensah, a junior who won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet 5 inches.

And Berry’s 4-by-400 relay team also took a championship.

Those were the only winners from the Charlotte or Raleigh areas.

Class 4A meet

West Iredell junior Bryant Moore was a one-man show for his team as he won the 1,000-meter run and finished third in the 1,600 meters and fourth in the 3,200 meters.

His effort gave West Iredell a sixth-place finish in the boys’ standings.

There were no other event winners from the Charlotte or Raleigh areas.

In the boys’ competition, Central Academy of Monroe took second place in the 4-by-400 relay, and Carrboro placed second in the 4-by-800 relay.
