Saturday’s state championships: Which Charlotte-area teams won rings this weekend?

There were state championships everywhere Saturday, and Charlotte-area teams won a lot of them.

Mallard Creek’s girls won their first track title after coming up three points short last year, but the Mavericks’ boys had a disqualification in the final race that cost them a third straight ring.

Pine Lake Prep’s tennis team won a title, and Covenant Day’s softball team won its first. And that was just the beginning.

Scroll down for complete coverage, plus statewide scores for N.C. public and private school team championships.

Charlotte Christian wins 18th baseball title

Charlotte Christian is an N.C. state baseball champion again.

After losing Game 1 of its best-of-3 championship series Friday night to Metrolina Christian, Christian won a gritty Game 2, 5-3, on Saturday to force a deciding Game 3 about 30 minutes later.

And the Knights beat Metrolina, 8-5, in the rubber match, denying the Warriors a second title in three seasons.

Charlotte Christian (28-7) — which ran out to a big lead in the deciding game — won its first state championship since 2022 and its 18th overall.

It was the first for Knights coach Reid Fronk, a 2004 graduate who played under legendary Christian coach Greg Simmons. Simmons died in 2023 after more than 700 wins and 16 state championships.

Simmons built Christian into a regional power in 30 seasons. Fronk, who just finished his fourth season, has kept that going.

Fronk is now 98-32 in his career, and now has that first ring.

Mallard Creek girls win first track title, DQ cost boys a 3-peat

Mallard Creek’s girls, led by a sprint triple from Bella Marie Black, ran away with the first state championship in school history Saturday in Greensboro, but a DQ in the final event cost the boys the team title.

For the girls, Black won the 100- and 200-meter titles and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team. Mallard Creek’s girls finished with 108 points to beat Green Hope (52) and Myers Park (47). The Mavericks, who won the indoor state title a few months ago, finished second to Cardinal Gibbons in 2025 outdoors by just three points.

Mallard Creek’s girls won the 2026 NCHSAA 8A track championship on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

Saturday, however, the Mavericks left no doubt.

The Mallard Creek boys, seeking to win a third straight state title, were in great shape as star Nyan Brown — who won the 300 hurdles by more than a second earlier Saturday — headed down the stretch in the 1,600 relay.

The Mavericks were easily winning the race, which would have delivered the state title. As he crossed the finish line, Brown raised the back of his hand up, all five fingers outstretched. He was immediately called for a celebration penalty. It cost Mallard Creek the race — and the title.

Durham’s Jordan High won the championship with 74 points, just ahead of Mallard Creek (72) and Enloe (57).

Note: Greensboro Dudley won the boys’ 6A title and Jamestown Ragsale won the girls.

Providence Day girls win NCISAA lacrosse title

Providence Day’s girls’ lacrosse team beat rival Charlotte Latin, 8-5, to win the NCISAA Division I girls’ lacrosse state championship Saturday.

Latin led 3-2 at halftime, but a big six-goal push by the Chargers put them in front for good.

Providence Day (13-8) won its fifth straight game.

Providence Day won its second straight state title after beating Charlotte Country Day, 14-8, in the 2025 state final.

Providence Day wins girls’ soccer state title

Providence Day won its third straight state championship in girls’ soccer Saturday.

The Chargers shut out Carmel Christian, 2-0, and won their fifth straight game to finish the season. Providence Day beat Carmel, 2-0, in a regular-season meeting in April.

Providence Day (18-4-1) shut out three of its final five opponents, allowing only two goals after being upset by Cannon School, 2-1, on April 23.

Carmel Christian (14-5) had its four-game win streak ended.

Covenant Day wins first NCISAA softball championship

Covenant Day beat Cannon School, 9-5, Saturday to win its first state championship.

The Lions won the best-of-3 series two games to none after beating Cannon, 7-5, on Friday night.

In Saturday’s Game 2, Covenant Day trailed 3-2 after the first inning. But the Lions scored three times in the top of the second inning and kept the lead after that.

On Saturday, Avery Houseton hit a two-run homer in the first inning and was intentionally walked four times, including with the bases loaded in the top of the second inning. Reilly Jane Llaneza was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Charlotte Hall was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

“It’s kind of surreal,” said fifth-year coach Ashley Houseton, Avery’s mom. “I’m still kind of living in the moment, right? These five seniors (Houseton, Llaneza, Hall, Maizy Jones and Kaitlyn Allen) have been with me since seventh grade. We refer to them as the Fab 5. And they bought into the vision of the program and played selfless throughout their time here at Covenant Day. I couldn’t do it without them and the buy-in from their families. It makes it pretty special. It’s bigger than the trophy, and I’m beyond proud of these girls.

“Proud is an understatement.”

Charlotte-area teams dominate 5A, 7A NCHSAA track Friday

Charlotte-area teams continued their dominance of the N.C. state track championships Friday.

After area teams won five of the eight championships at N.C. A&T on Wednesday and Thursday, that trend continued in the 5A and 7A meets in Greensboro.

JM Robinson won the 5A boys’ meet and North Lincoln took the girls’. North Lincoln finished with 77 points, just ahead of Croatan (75.50).

In 7A, two Union County rivals won state titles: Cuthbertson boys and Marvin Ridge’s girls. And two Union teams finished second: Cuthbertson’s girls and Weddington’s girls.

Marvin Ridge’s girls won by four points, totaling 61, just ahead of Cuthbertson (57) and Marvin Ridge (55).

Robinson ran away with the boys 5A title, with 73 points, well ahead of second-place Oak Grove (45).

Cuthbertson had 56.5 points to win the boys’ 7A crown, just ahead of Weddington (51). Cuthbertson won its third NCHSAA outdoor state championship and finished the 2025-26 school year with a triple crown of sorts, winning cross-country plus the indoor and outdoor track state championships.

Individually, Robinson’s Cameron Tucker was MVP of the boys’ 5A meet and teammate Coryn Tucker was girls’ MVP. Coryn Tucker won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter titles. Cameron Tucker won the same three races.

In 7A, Durham Hillside’s Tyler Adams was boys’ MVP, and Chapel Hill’s Aleah Wright was girls’. Wright won the long jump and triple jump.

Garner’s Jamie Paku won the girls’ 200 and 400 meters. She was sixth in the 100.
